I was looking for a CPU for about $90 CND and I came up with the 2 CPU's from AMD which both costs about the same (Athlon is a little more expensive). They are clocked the same, but use different sockets. How do they differ and which one is better for gaming?

Solution
the Athlon Is newer and is based of the trinity apus and overclocks farther as its based off the piledriver cores but if i remember does not have L3 cache. The Phenom II x4 has 4 individual cores is older based off K10 cores from 2009, but has L3 cahce and overclocks roughly usually to 3.8-4ghz maybe 4.2, where the athlon goes higher as its a piledriver based core.

once overclocked the 750k beats the A10 cpu, i believe the 750k is based off the A8 5600k apu

Im not sure which one would be better but id hope newer is better but id say i would prob buy the Phenom but thats just me but would def overclock either or.

The 965 is prob best as...

The 965 is prob best as games like L3 cache. If u can afford it def get the fx 6300 a sure winner over both those two

Athlon doesn't have L3 cache and Phenom does. Also, the 750K should be based of the 5800k but have a slower clock sped (Odd). How does having an L3 cache benefit?

FYI, Tom's is soon featuring both of these CPU's (along with 3 others) in an upcoming story, tested stock and overclocked. I can't play the spoiler, but if you can wait...

Other thoughts: Consider which socket path you want. In the US, I'm noticing boxed Deneb getting scarce. So that X4 965 may soon disappear. Priced less than the 750K... sounds like a good deal!

oh, BTW, Athlon II X4 640 is in that story too, so you'll get a good look at what L3 cache adds and when. Athlon II (Propus) is basically Phenom II (Deneb) minus the L3 cache. The Trinity-based 750K is quite a bit different, 2 Piledriver modules/4 cores.

The AM3+ socket you would get for the 965BE could upgrade to FX8350 in future but its currently unknown if next gen chips will be released on the platform. If you get an FM2+ board for the A10 then you will be able to upgrade to Steamroller but not if you get just an FM2.

If I were you I would get a new amd Richland a6 6400k. It's fast and has a built in gpu. Easy to overclock and only cost $80. If you are willing to spend a little more get the a8 Richland apu.
