Hi guys

I have had this SAMSUNG hard disk for roughly 2 years now and for the past couple of months i have noticed odd activity with this drive.

Sometimes when i try to access the drive, it will tell me its corrupted and I cant access it. Sometimes this occurs to the entire drive and i wont be able to access anything.

Sometimes it only affects a folder or 2. This happens maybe 1 out of every 2 days. And after i do a CHKDSK, it will work again by itself.

Also sometimes when i start the PC, the CHKDSK runs before windows launches

This is the error i get from HD tune
Ultra DMA CRC error count (this number has been going up regularly)

I have also used seatools to check with all their tests and everything turns out ok.

I have
1- swaped new sata cables
2- swaped sata ports (on mobo) with a different drive

some additional info
-i have 3 hdds running of a sata power cable from my corsair hx850
ive been told this doesnt matter

Now is this drive faulty and should i RMA it? Or what can i do?
All help apprieciated, thanks.

What do you mean by the SMART data shows its like new

Also I have tried changing sata cables. including swapping it with a sata cable that was being used by a different working drive.
It doesnt seem to fix the problem.

Also im not quite understanding the last part, do you mean my errors are due to CHKDSK? or i should backup before using CHKDSK.

Also even after using CHKDSK the issue still persists. CHKDSK works as a quick fix but the same issue always appears after a while.

Would this be a fault of the samsung drive? should i be RMA it?

yes as i mentioned in the opening post, i have tried different sata ports and different sata cables.
And the result is the same.

I am a bit confused to your suggestion, you mention the drive is fine but also say i can return it.

is the drive faulty?

Did you try a known working drive on the sata port the bad drive is normally on? If so, did that drive continue to work properly? If it worked, then you can rule out that sata port as a problem basically leaving the other hard drive as your problem.

Yes I swaped the sata ports on the mobo for Drive I (faulty) with Drive D (working)

Drive D continued working in both slots
Drive I is still problematic

So logically the motherboard and the sata controllers should be working ?
and it is in fact the Drive I that is faulty?

Im am concerned about the RMA process as the Drive I has passed all the tests from Seatools (SMART, long, short...etc)

What do you think?

It sure sounds like the drive to me. I'd contact seagate support and explain the problem. If you are showing a SMART error, they should honor the warranty.

Ok I will try to RMA this drive, a few have mentioned it is most likely the logic board / sata interface on the HDD that is faulty.

Is this the right terminology to use when I try to make my case to Seagate?
