Acer Aspire 5253 does not acknowledge the existence of a SATA External HDD

No matter which USB port I try to plug the External into, my windows explorer does not show the External HDD.
It is a 1tb HDD that had been set up to run on a Linux machine (Ubuntu, if that matters) and has quite a bit of data on it. Media mostly. I am rather at my wits end trying to get this to work again. Please advise.

I would begin first by verifying the disk is being recognized for use by Windows, if you are still running Windows on your Aspire.

To do this, press Windows + R and type diskmgmt.msc and click OK.

After the Disk Management console loads, you will be shown a list of all storage devices that Windows sees as attached to the system.

If you can identify the external disk in the Disk Management console, it is being identified by Windows, whether or not it remains inaccessible.

As you state, the disk is formatted for Linux. Your problem may simply be that the disk is in a format that is unsupported and unreadable without extra software on Windows.

There are methods available for reading Linux partitions...
