Good day gentlemen

I have an issues here and I would like your guys opinion on this as I am very confused.

This is my third Gigabyte gtx 660.First one did the same, sent it to warranty.Second one did the same, sent it to warranty. Now I got my third one and u know...still the same.

I have no clue what's going on, did I just hit a bad batch of these cards or something because every review I read says this is a great card ( and it is temperature/performance wise, it really is ) with very low noise levels.

And I agree that it has low noise levels but when I freaking turn a game on or 3Dmark/Kombuster/w.e. It makes this very weird sound that persists even tho I stopped the fans manually just to be sure.

I have a audio clip on youtube so you can judge for yourself as I think these kind of sounds are hard to explain literally.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OohXp_FPAw4

Hope its ok for me to post links, I just really want to give you guys all the information I can so you wont have to ask me 100 questions after this.

My PC ( just in case it matters or maybe u can get smth out of it ) :

Super Flower SF-701 Black - case
Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8GB DDR3 1600MHz CL8 Dual Channel Kit
Intel Core i5 4430 3GHz
MB : ASRock B85 Pro4
SSD KingMax SMU32 Client Pro 120GB SATA-III 2.5 inch
Seagate 500 GB HDD
PSU : Corsair CX500 V2

It seems to do this at high fps.Tho even if I cap my fps in EVGA precision at like 80-100 it can still be heard.

I have no clue if this is something bad or not, but common sense tells me for what im paying for this card ( its like freaking 300$ here in Romania ) and for what the reviews are saying about this card, this should not happen.

So yea this is my 3rd card and I cant give it back and they wont give me my money back for it because they have it in stock so they will just replace it.

Thanks in advance!

Solution
I had Palit GTX660, ASUS GTX760, ASUS GTX770 and now have Zotac GTX660. And all cards have hissing noise under load. For higher fps(1500+) they squeak. I tested Asus GTX770 in another PC with Thermaltake 700W PSU and it changed nothing.
In my PC I have 3 120mm(FDB) fans at 700-800rpm and OCZ 550W PSU with 140mm fan. And 1 Hitachi hard drive. They are all pretty silent.
And I had Gigabyte GTX660 for almost 1 year. It had problem with fan. But I didn't notice any coil whine(hissing/buzzing/squeaking noise) with it. Maybe I didn't pay attention or maybe I had fans at higher rpm. Or maybe I didn't run 1500+ fps scenes.

What am I writing it for? I think that everybody who says that his GTX660's absolutely silent has noisy system and they...

Yes, but for example i've seen on linus's techtips the 660 TwinFrozr, while in Skyrim, was very silent.I know mine's gigabyte, but can this coil whine have any negative ramifications down the line, like in 1 year from now? This is my fist major PC upgrade in like 5 years so the money I spent on this means alot to me ( especilly here in Romania were salaries are shit and electronics are overpriced like hell . the twin frozr ones si almost 100$ more expensive ).

O shit, something is definetly wrong. From what I know and have seens, as I have said, most dont vibrate. And I just ordered a MSI 7790 and got it and had pretty good reviews for a mid card aswell.Guess what, in games it does the same. I think it may have something to do with my motherboard maybe. Is it possible?I mean something must be wrong that all cards just magically vibrate like hell on my computer.

i have 2 of the gigabyte windforce OC cards. neither make any noise. Its probably not the card at all, its something else in your system, motherboard or something. Maybe even a fault with your psu not delivering clean power. First thing to do would be to remove all the components from your case and bench test them, sometimes i can be a component leaking voltage through the enclosure, i have seen this.

It cant be from the PSU, I mean I've had CX500 from Corsair, and replaced it with a Seasonic 620W due to coil whine. And this one is silent as a baby and its actually kinda overkill for my computer atm but it was at a very good price.

O no man, it is the GPU that is making the noise.I have tested this extensively with lower end card and they dont make noise ( like a 8600GT assus gaming series , old ass card but still runs games on low today no problem ).

I have played on intel 4600 HD from the haswell chip I have and the computer is silent ( besides my fans ).

Its 100% the card, I have pin pointed it,But I do not know why. When I enable vertical sync, in some games, it not so load, in others doesnt matter.

Maybe its something on my motherboard that has problems and its making the card make that noise.

Another thing is I tested the 660 GTX from Gigabyte on a friend's PC and it still makes the noise and the guys at warranty who tested the 660 actually gave me 2 replacements so I m guessing they experienced the same. SO

So im really confused , is it the cards, is it my rig?

Another thing I noticed today, I put Starcraft 2 on LOW and it didnt make the noise anymore. And I started testing some of the graphics options there and when I switch shaders from LOW to MEDIUM it sound starts again. Interesting..

Btw i m terribly sorry for my ill formated and rambling style of writing.

For a not so informed average computer user like myself what I have found is interesting. But I stil ask then. why do crowe's 2Gigabyte no make any sound while mine does. What am I missing? I mean I had a GTX 460 at one point in my old PC ( this pc being 2 months old ) with a dual core and a pretty noname brand PSU and everything was silent, especially the 460.

ok, just because the 460 didnt make the noise and the 660 does, doesnt mean its not another component putting dirty power through that just happens to make your 660 make noise, if you get what i mean. Say your motherboard has a fault for example, the 460 does not produce this symptom because its coils, or whatever component, doesnt vibrate at this frequency. you put the 660 in, which has something theat resonates at this frequency, and bam there's your sound, no matter how many 660's you put in there. It could even be feedback from another device like optical drive or hdd, and when you get to a certain power draw, the noise presents itself. I just find it hard to believe you have 3 bad cards in a row all with exactly the same issue, unless they are just giving you the same one back because it tests ok in their system. Normally when you rma something they probably never even test it, especially if the product doesnt have much $ value to them, they just ship a new one, cheaper than spending hours testing it. I have worked for places like this, it happens, or you just chuck them in a pile for when you have nothing to do, and any that test good get marked as "refurbished" and then get shipped as warranty replacements.......many companies do this, i wont say which ones....but its probably most of them.

Yea well I bought a 7790 and it does the same sound, only to a lither degree, but not much lighter. I mean the 660 was doing so much noise that the screen had constant horizontal lines,in games that is.While the 7790 does a lighter version of the sound, thus not having those lines in games.

I agree with you tho, there has to be smth from my computer that is causing the video cards to act up like that. But freaking what, could it be the motherboard, I mean I did test the 660 on a friend's motherboard and it did the same ( both mine and his are ASROCK tho if that matters ).

Would a Thermaltake lightpower 600 really be better than a CX500 corsair and more importantly a 620W brand new SEasonic? I mean I've already tried his PSU, by putting the card into his computer and it does the same.

So anyone any ideas? Why is it that mine make noise and others have way more befee computers and have no coil whine. Is it a matter of luck?

How about me changing 3 cards and still getting it, and then getting a HD7790 and that also coil whines, but to a lesser degree since it uses less power. I mean am I really that unlucky?Or is it something from my coomputer?

I have 2-way GTX 660 SLI and yeah I'm experiencing the same shit!!...yet I'm confused as while reading your thread.. I noticed that you have replaced your card many times.. and still nothing happened!... don't know whether it another component problem or not but I don't think so as this noisy shit comes out only when a game is runnig!! by the way my rig is
AMD fx 4170 - CPU
Cross-hair formula Z - Motherboard
Cougar 700W - PSU
8 GB 2133 Gskill Ribjaw - RAM

Which has nothing similar to your rig except for the cards!!.......AND I'M HAVING A HARD TIME TRYING TO UNDERSTAND WHAT'S WRONG!

I have the same card and it does the same.

It's the plastic casing around the fans.

If I hold it it stops making the noise.

I am not a gigabyte fan. Never been. I regret this purchase now.

Asus all day everyday.

i had 2 of the gigabyte 660 oc windforce cards and neither made any noise. just sayin.....

Solution

i dont think running anything at 1500fps is necessary, since no monitor can display them all. most of them get discarded or partially displayed.

It is necessary for folding@home at least.
