Can't Select 1080p in Windows. Can in Nvidia Control Panel (1080p Monitor)

Hello Toms Hardware!
I just got my hands on an MSI GTX 770 Gaming and just had a quick question.

I loaded up World Of Warcraft and set the graphics options to the 'High' preset (second highest) with multisampling at x1 Where I was getting ~90fps but occasionally falling below 60fps. Am I wrong in saying that seems a little low? I have upgraded from two HD6770s in CrossFire and, don't get me wrong, there has been an improvement, just not as substantial as I expected.

I'm about to check the performance of my other regular games to see if there is an improvement.

My Rig
MoBo: ASUS P8P67
CPU: Intel i5-2500k @4.5GHz
GPU: MSI GTX 770 Gaming
PSU: Corsair TX650
RAM: 8GB @1333MHz

CPU load was sitting at around 55% while the GPU was bouncing around a fair bit, probably averaging around 65%

Thanks

EDIT: This was a previous question from before I noticed the issue. Please go down the thread to see the issue I am faced with.

Windows will not allow me to select 1080p while Nvidia Control Panel will. This means that, allow my Desktop can indeed run at 1080p the maximum resolution I am given ingame or anywhere else is 1680x1050

Solution
You can find the monitor drivers on the CD that came with the monitor. Or if you lost it, you can find them on the manufacturer's website sometimes (Support / Download section).

If you intended to play games on two monitors I'd try to solve this issue first.

Thanks for the reply.
I have another question, for some reason, Borderlands 2 isn't giving me the option for 1080p despite my computer running at that resolution, any ideas?

Yeah, WoW is more a CPU intensive game, but I see you already have a i5-2500K which is good and you already have overclocked it. Not much more you can do.

As already mentioned by expl0itfinder if you really want to put your 770 to the test, try some demanding first-person shooters instead.

Are you using a DVI connection to your monitor??

Also, are your able to run other games at 1080p?

1) Yes I am using DVI
2) Some games still run at 1080p but most do not
3) I can't figure out how to change the aspect ratio

I've noticed that my monitor is considered a 'Generic PnP Monitor' which if I recall correctly, it wasn't previously. I am currently doing a full driver wipe/reinstall to see if it helps

Even if the monitor is listed as Generic PnP Monitor it shouldn't cause any issues. Most people running Windows (even gamers) do not install the monitor drivers. But you can always install the .inf for the monitor if you want it recognized with the real name, but each time I did this in my life I couldn't tell the difference between before and after. So monitor drivers are really optional IMHO. Anyways, as I said I don't think your problem comes from there.

And most games I've seen when you go to video options the "aspect ratio" is always easy to find it's usually right next to the resolution, but I don't know about Borderlands 2 specifically.

You are most likely right about the Monitor thing, I was just spit-balling really.
Anyway, I fully wiped all the old drivers and reinstalled Nvidia Drivers to no avail.
Desktop remains at 1920x1080
The likes of Borderlands 2 still max out at 1680x1050

Maybe there is a setting in Nvidia Control Panel I am overlooking? This is my first Nvidia GPU and I have no idea how the software works.
Thanks again for your help.

On the games that have been affected I genuinely can't see an Aspect Ration option :-(

EDIT: Since this post I have been searching the interwebs for a solution. I haven't been able to find a situation identical to my own but I have found some that are at least similar. Is it possible for this issue to be caused by a faulty DVI Cable? I think what is confusing me most is that my Desktop remains at 1080p but not games...

It definitely isn't an issue with Aspect Ratio's
Skyrim is still set to '16:9 Widescreen' but the max resolution I am given is 1600x900 or 1680x945 [Letterbox]

That's really strange and I can't really explain it. Not sure if this can be fixed in nVidia control panel but you can always look. Or you could try to switch cable as you say, but if your desktop is already in 1080 I highly doubt it's the cable. Or maybe you could connect with displayport or HDMI and see if it makes a difference (if your monitor takes these connections of course).

Sounds more like a software problem, like corrupted drivers, etc... But you said you already uninstalled and reinstalled your drivers, I guess you probably are using the latest version? It's a long stretch but you could always try to install your monitor drivers (.inf file) as discussed previously and see if it makes a difference.

Since the GTX-770 is a new card, it might also be that the game itself isn't detecting it correctly, maybe a patch for the game is required. But most the time these kind of issues are solved with a graphics drivers update, maybe you could try with nvidia beta drivers (more recent, but less stable).

Anyone else got other ideas?

I'm already running the 326 Beta Drivers, that was my first idea after I noticed the issue

My monitor only supports DVI at the moment, though I have a new LG monitor that does arriving tomorrow for a duel-monitor setup with my new card! I'll give that a shot.

Where can I find these monitor drivers? Currently using a HKC 1922A

I intend to only play on one monitor, as in use oje for gaming and one for internet etc (not eyefinity) but your point still stands I will fix this first.

I am going to bed now, it is 00:36 here in the UK. Could you perhaps draw up a trpubleshooting list or something for me to try in the morning?

So far I have:
-Fresh reinstalled Nvidia 320 Drivers
-Fresh reinstalled Nvidia 326 Beta Drivers
-Used both CCleaner and Driver Fusion to clear old Driver files
-Ensured my Monitor was set to widescreen (monitor menu)
-Rebooted countless times
-Changed back and forth between resolutions in Nvidia Control Panel

Note: Games such as Skyrim, Borderlands 2, Driver: San Fransisco and Dead Island are limited to 1680x1050. Civlization 5, WoW and Saints Row 3 still gave the option for 1080p

Note: Monitor called 'Generic PnP Monitor' in System, I don't think it used to be.

I am aware you probably knoe everything I just posted but I thought a recap might be helpful, especially in anyone else would like to help.

Thanks again for all your assistance mate,
Conor

I really would prefer not to do a Windows reinstall. I am right in saying this fully wipes all system data? I say this because I currently don't have an External Hardrive (lent it to a friend) and the internet connection is my area is diabolical so it would take an age to redownload all my games etc.

What I have noticed is that Windows itself can't see the 1920x1080 (Lord knows how some games still give me the option) What I mean is that, if, on Windows 'Screen Resolution' I reduce my resolution below 1920x1080 I then can only set a maximum of 1680x1050 whereas, if I go on to Nvidia Control Panel and adjust from there, I am allowed to select 1920x1080 and indeed it does change.

I am currently redownloading my old AMD Drivers, I am going to wipe the Nvidia software and reinstall my old HD6770s and see if the problem persists, at least this way I can highlight whether this is to do with the Nvidia Software/Hardware

Once again, thanks for all your help and please continue!!!

Okay, so in an attempt to solve the issue I had planned to fully uninstall the the GTX 770 and all Nvidia software (using Driver Fusion and CCleaner) After uninstalling all the Nvidia Drivers, before shutting down I thought 'Oh what the heck' and checked the Windows 'Screen Resolution' page to see if I could select 1920x1080. Sure enough, this was the ONLY setting available (the drop-down is greyed out) and, upon going into Borderlands 2 External video options I could select 1920x1080!

Now the question is. What does this suggest? A faulty GPU or faulty Drivers?

Well, after two whole days of fiddling I finally got the issue sorted.

All I can say is that my monitor was faulty, not sure exactly what was wrong though. I just so happened to be waiting on a new LG monitor for an intended Duel-Monitor setup. When it arrived I elected to replace my current monitor with the new one in the faint hope that it would somehow resolve the issue and, well it did :p

I now have full use of the 1080p display (on my new monitor that is) But before I go and spend another £100 to replace the faulty one, any ideas as to what could be up?

Thanks for all your help though :)

Did you install the monitor drivers as suggested previously? It could also have been some video drivers corruption. When you first installed the GTX-770, did you remove the old AMD drivers before installing the nvidia ones? It's just that I'm not entirely sure your monitor is faulty, it just seems like Windows/Games don't detect it correctly. Sounds more like a software problem than hardware.

I know you don't want to do a full Windows reinstall, but sometimes it's necessary. I usually do it every 2 or 3 years. Over time Windows tend to slow down with all the software and updates being installed, nothing beats a good old reformat (and yes it is destructive so you need to back-up your data). Not saying you need to do it now because you seem to have solved your problem, but one day or another it has to be done eventually if you want to bring speed back to a system.

I know they are necessary, it's just I only updated to Win8 a six months agi (ish) and the PC is only 15months old.

I did fully wipe the old Drivers, using Driver Fusion and CCleaner, reinstalled the Nvidia drivers three times. I'll wack the monitor in again one last time and have a look. I couldn't find the Drivers anywhere, it is HKC which seem to have been inactive for a while and there are no drivers that I can see
