Windows 7 deactivation?

. My copy of Win 7 was previously installed on my primary PC, which I formated and installed Win 8 on it.

Now I am unable to activate Win 7 on my secondary PC, because the key is said to be invalid. I double checked it for typos and that's not the problem.

Is it possible that I have to somehow deactivate my primary PC Win 7 activation in order to install it on my secondary PC?

If it a retail license, not OEM, just call Microsoft for phone activation like THIS. If OEM, it is not transferable.

Also if it was a retail win 7 version and not OEM -- Was the win 8 install an upgrade ? If so the win 7 activation is now a part of the win 8 license and is not reuseable on another system.

Is that a LEGAL copy of 7 you bought in the store? If it is a OEM copy, as RealBeast mentioned, that 'discounted' cost you got in the PC for Windows, ties that Windows to that PC ONLY, it can't go on another PC.
