Hi folks, first time poster, feel free to move this post to the appropriate board if needed.

Built my computer almost a year ago and I've been having issues with stuttering (computer stalls for 1 second every few minutes). Audio is messed up during that time, keyboard and mouse jumps a bit but then everything returns to normal. I've tried a lot of things and narrowed it down the it being related to me being connected to the internet.

This happens ONLY when I'm connected to the internet and happens regardless of how I'm connected to the internet, usb wifi key, pcie wifi card, ethernet cable . It does not happen while I'm not on the internet. No one else on the network has the same issue. Can't really remember when it started, but I've also RMA'd my motherboard for a different issue (which is now fixed) and tried a reformat of my OS drive. Prior to the RMA, the stuttering happened EXACTLY every 4 minutes, now its a little more sporadic.

Other things I've tried. Disabling my antivirus, disabling internet related software (netlimiter, utorrent, netmeter, skype). Returning motherboard to default settings (i.e. no more overclocking). Installing drivers for networking and other devices from manufacturer website. No luck obviously. For anyone familiar with the software, DP latency checker shows a huge spike every once in awhile but it doesn't diagnose the problem.

What to do?

Okay taking a step back.
1) Your connection to the Internet is a single user connection your stating correct? No one else connected?
2) Your router wireless connection, is it secured with WPA2 or is it OPEN?
3) Turn OFF wireless and connect with a wired connection (different then what you have done before), does the 'every 4 minutes' stop or still happening?
4) As you see this happen, press CTRL ALT DEL and start Task manager. Select the check box lower left corner to SHOW ALL PROCESSES, then click on CPU at the top to SORT by the CPU (highest uses should be at the to). Monitor this during the 'spikes' and is there any processes spiking at this time?
5) Looking at the bottom of Task manager how much CPU Usage do you normally run? How...
Hi,

Monitor you temperatures and cpu usage ?
Scan for viruses with malware bytes, adwcleaner, roguekiller and combofix if you are heavily.
Try with Ethernet cable to see if usb wireless key is defective or interference.
Update flash player.
If you use avast, try microsoft security essential, I had big issues with avast 8+

What's you computer config ?

Stuttering happens even when I'm just web browsing, so CPU usage should not be a problem for anything. Temperatures are all within norm (<70 degrees even in load situations). Ethernet cable and another pcie wifi card tried, still an issue. Regularly do cleans with malware bytes, super antispyware, avast. Stuttering still happens when Avast is disabled (I haven't tried uninstalling it though). What do you mean computer config?

6) NEVER turn off your antivirus, I have multiple systems running AVAST! from multiple makers, and I have not had a problem. Your 'thinking' the AV is causing the issue is more accurate with McAfree and Symantec which include bundled FireWalls and other parts that had been known to Hog PC cycles (see #4 above) on many systems, AVAST! and AVG do not normally do that.
7) Get HIJACK THIS (http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/) and run it while jacked in and with your wireless off. Copy and paste the results here please.

1. no there are multiple devices on the network, and its always been this way
2. its secured using wpa2
3. i have tried a wired connection, it still happened (although this was prior to the RMA of my motherboard). it's not every 4 minutes anymore, its more random now i think. I can try wired connection again in a bit, its kind of a hassle. i dont suspect its the problem anyways, the wireless devices work fine on other computers, why shouldnt it work on mine.
4. its hard to catch the spikes (since its not as predictable as before and lasts for a second), but i didnt see anything during the previous spike. ill keep an eye out on it again
5. something around 10-15% usage. stayed the same during the previous spike
6. i only turned it off temporarily to check if it still works (in avast, you can disable it for 10 mins, 1 hr etc). its still on.
7. hijack this to follow

I would recommend using AutoRuns to modify your start programs and deactivate as many non critical STARTUP ones (avoid any of the DLLs, Services etc. unless your very familiar with them).

C:\Program Files (x86)\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe - This will constantly be polled for services offered EVEN if you set it to NOT share (by default it is set to SHARE so the entire world looking up Torrents constantly looks at your Internet connection for those files you downloaded already / offer to share). This should NOT be running in the background, only when you need to use it.

O2 - BHO: Groove GFS Browser Helper - {72853161-30C5-4D22-B7F9-0BBC1D38A37E} - C:\PROGRA~2\MICROS~1\Office14\GROOVEEX.DLL
Unless your using Microsoft Sharepoint to Collaborate on documents uninstall this from Office or deactivate it in Autoruns. This again is constantly polling for Domain Services.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BCSSync] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\BCSSync.exe" /DelayServices - Again same as Groove

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NetLimiter] C:\Program Files\NetLimiter 3\NLClientApp.exe /tray - Get rid of this, really it isn't effective as compared to running QoS on your router (see below as I explain that).

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\Run: [Sidebar] %ProgramFiles%\Windows Sidebar\Sidebar.exe /autoRun (User 'LOCAL SERVICE') Disable Sidebar, as MS stopped supporting it, so it spends ALOT of time polling MS for support of the the gadgets installed even if you don't use them. if you need any monitoring software use Rainmeter, alot less CPU usage and very customizable.

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\RunOnce: [mctadmin] C:\Windows\System32\mctadmin.exe (User 'LOCAL SERVICE') Disable unless you like 'targetted marketting' provided to you.

O23 - Service: Adobe Acrobat Update Service (AdobeARMservice) - Adobe Systems Incorporated - C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\armsvc.exe Deactivate this, use a manual check instead or rely on AVAST! to provide the info, one less thing needlessly running and using bandwidth. FYI when Acrobat needs a update it does slow down any connection, and will keep retrying while the service is running and it 'fails to download successfully'.

O23 - Service: @%SystemRoot%\system32\snmptrap.exe,-3 (SNMPTRAP) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\System32\snmptrap.exe (file missing) Remove SNMP from your Network Properties. Unless your doign special network management this is wasting bandwidth as it polls for SNMP devices to manage - communicate to.

O23 - Service: @%PROGRAMFILES%\Windows Media Player\wmpnetwk.exe,-101 (WMPNetworkSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\wmpnetwk.exe (file missing) Disable this, as it shares your music folders on your computers to all the other users of the network. So if somone 'scanned' or 'looked' for music may be actually playing it off your computer over the network, slowing you down in the process.

Otherwise I would also enable QoS (Quality of Services) on the Router AND all connecting devices. By using the table in the router you can set the priority of connections for example WoW Ports would be 1st Served, but YouTube Videos would be 2nd most served traffic as it goes through the router.

I really appreciate the help but do you think any of those are specifically causing me problems? I don't see why any of those programs would cause an issue. If they want to access the internet, they should be able to without breaking my computer. netlimiter and utorrent are non-issues, i turn them off and still get the stuttering (especially things with obvious wide spread use like adobe update, office or windows media player).. Netlimiter does what I want so I'm happy to keep it around.

Think of your Internet connection like the Doorway in your house. Now put your mom, dad, you, your brothers, cousins, etc. all in one room and then each decides on their own without regard for anyone else they need to leave. Not a big deal with your Mom and Dad may go at the same time, but then what if your cousins all get up and head to the door then your brother keeps coming in and out forgetting something he left behind, and so on. What happens in the doorway?

That is what potentially happens if your computer has alot of stuff 'running' in the background all do thier own thing all at thier own time, but eventually they all 'cram up' at the same time though the 'doorways' where things bottleneck (be it your CPU, memory, router, etc.). What we normally do to eliminate the 'culprits' is to widdle them down to keep them from 'getting in the way', as we investigate what is your issue. This is the first steps.

As I recommend first disable those and reboot, turn on QoS on all connected devices, for the debugging ensure the Wireless on your PC is DISABLED and your using a wired connection, then finally info on the router and connection you have would help also.

I am very aware alot of people dont' realize having 'two' connections (wired AND wireless) running causes similiar issues because it confuses Windows on who it is trying to talk on (imaging putting two cell phones one to each ear and try holding two conversations at the exact same time). Having a wired only connection eliminates Wireless signalling interference as a possible issue, which if things suddenly 'work' then the wireless is the issue.
