I have an old HDD that I'm trying to get data off of. I have it connected straight to my PC with SATA wires. When I boot my primary HDD I can see my old one and open; it is kind of loud but not really clicking just sounds like it's searching for something but when I try to navigate through the folders it freezes on some(it becomes very quite and sounds idle)

Some things I've tried:
-Opening on Linux error on opening directories
-Recuva gets to 22% and hangs
-Freezer trick is really strange whenever I take it out the bios doesn't even recognize it until it runs for a few minutes.

Also something else that may be interesting, after it gets very quite and idle every few minutes my PC freezes for a few seconds Are the files corrupted?

Hi

Have you run the manufacturers Hard disk diagnostics ?

Seagate dos bootable CD ISO image will test most brands of Hard disk

Western Digital's Windows diagnostics will also test most brands of Hard disk

(do not try to repair disk with unless Seagate (Maxtor) or WD (as appropriate)

If disk passes full test (unlikely) you could try chkdsk

Once you know how bad the problem is you can consider using programs like TestDisk / PhotoRecovery suit
or ddrescue (Windows & linux versions available)

Recuva is for undeleting files not reading files from damaged hard disk.

If files really important leave drive switched off and find a data recovery expert

Remember freezer trick requires you to put drive in Zip bag to keep moisture out...

Remember freezer trick requires you to put drive in Zip bag to keep moisture out (or risk damaging electronics)
and effect does not last long

Better have fan blowing on drive to keep it cool

best of luck
