Hey

My friend is selling a 8800 GTX oc for 55 dollars. Yes, i know it's an old card. i currently have a HD 7570 in my prebuilt machine. The 8800 does seem better than the 7570. Is it worth buying it?

I will buy a better GPU later.

FX-6350 CPU is a good choice, félicitation!

Well maybe i've mistaken your PSU (always I think OEM PSUs are weak). I looked into information and your PSU has power output on 12V rail, though on mutli rails. If u'r sure that your PSU has two 6-pin PCI-E conductor, u could easily go for HD 7870, it's good.

But also make sure u've at least 10" on your PCI-E X16 slot (From the wall of the rig to the cage of HDD or stuffs which limits).

Well u could save these 55 dollars to help u get a better gfx than your intend budget. The 8800 GTX is too power hungry 'cause its TDP is 185W and need 2 pci-e power conductor to feed it. I'm afraid your PSU couldn't handle as u'r using HD 7570 in your PRE-BUILD machine.

Let's compare it with less power hungry, currently med-range $100-ish GPU GTX 650 ti: http://www.hwcompare.com/13762/geforce-8800-gtx-vs-geforce-gtx-650-ti/
The answer is quite clear that u 8800 GTX is inferior and obsolete, even if your friend donate it to you but it will make u spend $70-80 bucks for upgraing PSU to 550W+

its not actually better mate. yes the 7570 is a bit weak for gaming but the gtx 8800 is considered minimum spec because its dx9-10 (i say dx9-10 because it wasnt really strong enough to run dx10 games at anything like meaningful fps when things like specular map, dof and advanced lighting is used.). its also power hungry so will cost more to run.
the 7570 on the other hand is dx11 even though its not really strong enough to run dx11 games it can still take advantage of some of its features. it will certainly be a lot better for watching video with its dedicated encoding... as well as handling dx10 better.
also $55 is way over what its worth. you can get a brand new dx11 card of comparable power for that price.

if you want to compare the actual performance look for benchmarks that compare the 7570 with the nvidia 530 and 545 you will see your 7570 is stronger... why the 530-545. they have 96 and 144 cuda cores which puts them on a par with the 8800gtx as far as gaming performance goes.

So if I buy like, say, a 7870, would i still need to upgrade my PSU ( 460 w)? My am/watt meter says 100 watts idle and 200 watts under load like playing Planetside 2. I'm guessing 460 w is peak.

If u go for HD 7870 u should upgrade your PSU. Recommend using good brands like corsair, XFX or seasonic, 500W or better and have more than 40 amps output from your 12V SINGLE rail (multi-rails are inferior than single imo)
