I have this motherboard in my current PC: ASUS M5A78L-M LX PLUS

I plan on upgrading to this CPU:
AMD FX-6300 Vishera 3.5GHz Socket AM3+ 95W Six-Core Desktop Processor FD6300WMHKBOX from an Athlon II X2 255 AM3 CPU

According to this list on the ASUS website, the FX-6300 is compatible with my MOBO, but the BIOS will need to be updated as the FX needs version 1201 but my BIOS version is 0306.

I upgraded the CPU in my laptop not too long ago and Windows 7 installed the BIOS update for me.

But I was wondering if it would be best for me to download & install the BIOS update from ASUS' page before I install the FX cpu (and remove my current one)? or could Windows install the BIOS update for me again?

It seems that way, under BIOS-Utilities for my MOBO the only thing there is 'Afudos BIOS update tool V2.41'

I assume this would help me install the update.

Can anyone give me some advice on the program itself? Do I need to download the BIOS version along with it? etc.

any info is appreciated! Want to be sure I'm able to do this correctly before I jump in and possibly brick my MOBO

Go ahead and run the utility, it will either automatically download the latest bios or will ask you to go download the bios you want and have a section where you upload the file. If all else fails there should be a way to flash your bios from a flash drive in case everything goes to hell. I suspect everything will go smoothly though.
