Hi, I am planning to assemble a home NAS server & very new in this field. The 4 3.5 hdds that I am planning to have will be put in the internal hdd cage of the pc cabinet and the 3 exposed 5.25" slots will remain empty. To utilize this space, I am thinking of putting blank 5.25" accessory trays. Now I have a couple of powered 3.5" 2TB USB hdds. So, in one of the trays I want to have a USB socket and a 2.5-5.5mm dc barrel jack so that I can just pull out the tray and plug in my external hdd. I don't want any additional wall power outlet to draw the power from but would like to draw the power from PSU. i.e. I need two things - one, to put a USB female at the back of the tray and connect it to motherboard and second, cut the external hdd's power cord (I have one extra) just below the adapter and solder the cable with dc jack (minus adapter) with a 12V line from SMPS. This jack will then be inserted into the back of the tray. Is this possible? Any help / suggestion will be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot for such prompt answer. They are seagate expansion 2TB external hdds and have barrel plug. Just to make sure I have understood correctly, I shall solder a male barrel plug to molex dc (yellow) and ground (black) and then it will go into female barrel plug of my seagate expansion. Is my understanding correct?
