Hey everyone,

I'm deciding between a GTX 780 (direct cu2 edition) or a 690. The 690 is only $60 more with considerably higher frames. I was wondering if micro stuttering is a big issue and if the 2 GB of VRAM on the 690 will be a problem in the coming years. I'm planning to keep either card for 2-3 years. Gaming on a 1080p 60hz monitor.

More about : 780 690

Generally micro stutter occurs in an SLI configuration and is less of a problem in single GPU setups, so that shouldn't be a problem. For 1080p gaming, 2GB will last you the 2-3 years. The extra VRAM is helpful for gaming on higher resolutions. Go with the 690 for the higher performance.

I can't tell you how many times I have said this. Do NOT upgrade your GPU until after AMD releases their next GPU series in October. For all we know at this point is their $500 "HD 9970" is going to be more powerful than the $650 GTX 780 at this point. I would be careful on where you put your pennies.

$60 for 14% more performance, no overclocking headroom, potential microstutter, alot more noise, more power consumption and no ability to SLI in the future.

Eh, I'd take the 780 any day.

Just saying, what if people don't want to wait until October?

Yea, but then i would always be waiting for the next big thing. There's always something better tomorrow....

The 690 is a dual GPU card...

Sure the 9970 will be faster but there is really no point to wait the GTX 780 is an excellent card

It's totally up to you but just keep in mind what 2 months of wait can get you in comparison

But if you wait another 3 months after the next 2 months, there may be another card on a smaller process and if you wait a few months months after that, the other company will release their new card on the smaller process.

It is a never ending process. If you need a card now, you might as well get one. If you are considering a new card, but not sure, that is when you may consider what is coming in a couple months.

Exactly. If you wait two months, you might as well wait another 6 to get another new generation. And another 6. And another 6. So on and so on.

I see you have dual 680's. Do you receive micro stuttering issues? Also is the 2 GB of memory ever a problem?

I have no microstutter issues I've seen. At least, not prolonged. There is always an occasional hitch with every setup, but its rare. I've also never had an issue with 2gb, but I also do not use high levels of AA, as I prefer high FPS. I have a 120hz monitor to go with it.
