I'm currently in the process of building my computer and I'm using the z87-g45 gaming mobo. I only have one stick of 8gb ram and my mobo has 4 channels. I flipped through the users guide and it only gave instructions on duo channel installation. Do I just install my ram in the first channel?

Solution
It should run in single channel OK, and far from having the throughput being 'halved', performance gain gain from dual channel can be up to 10-15%, far from losing 50%

Without going into too much detail, the system should always work installing the stick into the memory slot closest to the CPU.

You should run two sticks at the same time for a dual channel cpu though otherwise your memory throughput is halved.

Single channel vs dual channel is exactly half the throughput, because it has half the channels for data to traverse. Performance is not solely based on throughput though, and as many tests have proven faster access times can counteract for higher throughput.

Just to correct the tech jargon - Channel's in reference to memory is how many sticks of ram can simultaneously be written to and read from. What Reidmill refers to as a "channel" is actually a "slot".
