Oh no... did I just void my warranty?!

Hey guys..

So I bought a 770 a few days ago (Gigabyte), and just installed it. During the installation, I noticed a serial number sticker on the card. I thought to myself, that thing is going to burn up when I'm gaming! With that, I removed the sticker.

I was later concerned that a tiny bit of the sticker was still on the card, so I checked online to make sure that it would be okay. To my horror, I read that removing the serial sticker voids your warranty! However, I guess some companies accept RMAs and such if you include the sticker with the card, even detached.

I immediately searched my work space from top to bottom, but alas, I can't find it anywhere! I can't even recall what I did with it. I'm still looking, but I doubt I'll find it.

Now I'm terrified to turn on my machine, as the box itself was not sealed (not sure if that's just how it comes), and there was a tiny bent piece of metal on the edge of the card.

Have I seriously just screwed myself over on my warranty for a $400 card?

Solution
Generally companies don't enjoy screwing over customers, so as long as you explain what happened and what's wrong with the card, you shouldn't have any issues. Call customer service. They might be able to find the serial # for the card. Explaining everything you can to the manufacturer is probably your best bet.

Solution
Call GB and explain the situation. As long as you have (A)Receipt and (B)Box with serial codes you could be fine, this could go either way. We cannot really give you a solid answerer, but I think they will honour your warranty.

You shouldn't have a problem. Just keep all the boxes/papers/stickers etc. together. I learned that the hard way when I had a GPU I needed to return :(

There should be a serial number on the box. That is how say a store would verify that the card you are returning is the one that should have been in the box. If the two did no match it is a sure sign that the card in the box is wrong. They started doing that a long time ago because people were cleaning there old cards up and taking them back to the store claiming the card did not work. I had seen it done alot at Best Buy. Back then the people at the services desk did not really know any thing at all about computer hardware well even less than they do now.

MY GOD! I FOUND IT!

Sorry guys, I had to give this story a semi-happy ending. After hours of mind numbing and mind boggling searching, I finally found the dang thing! It was...

...on the back of the bloody shirt I installed it in. Yeah...

I even checked there once before, but I guess I was so stressed that I missed it.

Anyways, I contacted Gigabyte to see if my warranty is still valid. I had explained the situation to them via email shortly after this thread and before I found the sticker, yet received no response.

So, do you guys think I'm in the clear now? The sticker is still in one piece, but the sticky side has fuzz on it from being stuck to my shirt, so reattaching it to the card isn't really possible.

I do feel thoroughly stupid because of this whole ordeal. I knew better than to remove it in the first place. I think handling a $400 card made me so nervous that my judgement was impaired.

Hooray! I know the feeling. When I got my graphics card and I unboxed it, I was so excited to install it, that I practically threw all the boxes and other accessories away. That caused a bit of a problem when I needed to return my card a few days later. Hindsight is 20/20

Yes, it's a wonderful feeling!

Do you think my warranty is still valid, now that I have the sticker? I hear those things fall off all the time.

I sent a message to Gigabyte explaining the entire situation. They haven't read it yet. I'm thinking maybe I should just delete it, and say that it simply fell off if I ever need to return it (instead of professing my astounding stupidity).
