My parents are currently paying for the extreme service plan provided by twc. When we had Att, we always had a constant 10mbps connection and 1mb upload, after switching to twc, we rarely got the 30mbps download we were paying for. We usually got around 15, but sometimes it would drop down to 1mbps. I think the problem is the router. Twc said that they recommended a router with DOCSIS 3.0 for their higher service plans, but they provided us with a Netgear cgd24g with DOCSIS 2.0. Would switching the modem to one with a DOCSIS 3.0 specification solve the problem?

Solution
Maybe Although not exactly true you can think of docsis 3 being multiple docsis 2 connection run in parallel. Docsis2 is rated to just over 30m. So even if you were to get a docsis 3 modem they likely would only run a single channel so you in effect have docsis2. Now they may actually allow docsis3 signals at higher speed but limit it using other method so if that is true it would likely help.

More than likely you have the standard problem of ISP over selling and you and your neighbors are using all the bandwidth.

If you log into the modem it should have status screens that indicate the quality of the signal you are getting. I forget exactly what they should be but a google search should tell you if they are in acceptable...

I forget exactly what they should be but a google search should tell you if they are in acceptable range or not. If not then the ISP can come fix your cable. Note be very sure it is not your house wireing, you want the cablemodem as close the building entrance as you can get it with only a single splitter at most in the path.

Solution
Docsis 3 does need a faster router. I had to switch from a wrt54gs to an e2000 as the wrt would only give me 10-15mb speed and drop out a lot. It couldn't handle the load. With the e2000, same modem, same line, everything, 60mb down/10up. Router made all the diff.

Easy way to tell, plug the modem directly into your PC and test speeds. The gigabyte adapter and cpu of any PC made in past 6 years is mroe than enough to get full speeds out of it.

Thanks for the answers! When I plug my laptop directly into the modem, I am still getting only 10mbps download and around 1mbps upload. My dad is getting a new modem, which I think should solve the problem since our current overheats easily so I had to attach a fan to it.
