Someone gave me a E Machines T5082 desktop computer. It came with the origanal Vista Home install OS disc but he kept the hard drive. He said it had sensitive info. on it and did not want to give it to me. No problem, I have plenty of IDE hard drives lying around. However when I load the OS onto the computer I get a blue screen saying Windows failed to install because of the hardware on the computer. I called EMachines but they want $99.99 for their help, nonsense. If they can do it so can I. I just need information on how to get by their little scam and install the OS and booot up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same issue; To fix it you must format the drive with the OS disc. I had a previously formatted drive, but my OS disc gave the same error until I used it to format the drive.

The computer wont boot up. And I'm not sure how to format a HDD with the Vista DVD on another computer. Can I hook up the HDD via a usb adaptor put in the Vista DVD in my computer and direct it to the external HDD. How does one do that. I know not so much about computers but I take direction very well and am a experienced electronics technician with little computer skills. Thanks for your promt response to my problem, its much appreciated as I want to get this computer up for my little brother when he enters high school next semester. Thank you ever so much.

Sorry for the late response. I am not familiar with the E-Machine method of getting into Bios on boot.. try hitting Delete repeatedly when you first turn on the computer. once there, look through the bios. there may be a setting for setting the boot order, and you want to boot to the DVD you have the disk in. When the DVD starts to boot, is when you want to hit F8, if I recall correctly, which will get you to the menu where you choose to format the hard drive. Windows Vista if I recall will give an error on install with a drive that was already formatted. Why Microsoft just didn't say it in plain english just blows my mind.
