I've been building a gaming oriented computer this summer using the following components:

MSI 990FXA-GD80v2
Crucial 2x4gb low profile 1600 RAM
Toshiba 2TB 7200rpm HDD
MSI 7870 Ghz
Seasonic M12II 750w PSU
Currently Linux Mint 14, waiting to install Windows 7 Home 64bit until stability is worked out
Cheap PCI wifi card I had laying around until I can get a better one
CPU Phenom x6 1090t, athlon x2, (fx 8350 in the future if stability is sorted

I built it with a phenom x6 1090t I got from a friend. Went to BIOS perfectly but then when prompted to restart and save settings it froze partway through turning off, I held the power button down to finish turning it off then tried to start the computer and we weren't getting video signal but all the fans including the ones hooked to the motherboard were on and lit. I then try another processor an Athlon x2 dual core thinking it might be the CPU it starts up enters BIOS and I am able to reboot after BIOS and install Linux Mint 15, which freezes consistently, so I move down to the more stable Linux Mint 14, the freezes lessen but are still there. It never freezes while I'm using it, it usually happens where I'll be gone for 15 minutes and when I come back the monitor is in power saving mode after detecting no input and nothing will wake the computer up. I talked to newegg RMAed the motherboard and received a replacement and rebuilt it using the dual core, and it still has the freezing every once in a while.

TL;DR: stability issues, tried different CPU, PSU, new Motherboard, problems persist.

The only component I was unable to change with a known functioning version was the RAM due to the fact I don't have any ddr3 sticks laying around.

I'm thinking about returning the motherboard to newegg and switching to an intel setup with an i5 4670k instead I would like to get any suggestions what to do sooner so I can return the motherboard if needed so I'm not stuck with a slew of issues, no fix, and an expensive large paperweight.
Thank you for any suggestions

I'd go to Intel, or if staying with AMD exchange the mobo for a Asus, Rock or GB....but with what you have might try manually setting up the DRAM at 1.56 voltage and raise the CPU/NB voltage to 1.2 or so, have seen problems like this with MSI mobos not regulating voltage well and needing extra

I went into my bios and saw that the ram was running at 1066 instead of 1600, I went in and changed the timings, voltage, and freq. to what crucial had on their website and every time it would fail to start saying the last overclocking attempt failed

I've seen some bad reviews on newegg for the ram, many of which a crucial customer service person would reply with a statement saying on some AMD setups there is a compatibility issue. I assume that this could be what is occuring with my system right now.

Alright most likely if my motherboard is still returnable I'll go to the local microcenter and get a i5 4670k with asrock extreme4 z87 motherboard, I gotta call newegg because I've seen it as 30 days from the invoice or the replacement invoice for the return policy so if thats the case I'm good. Whats people opinions on the asrock extreme4?

Sweet mobo, it's a followup to their Z77 (which I run) and was among the best selling Z77 mobos out there, for Haswell I've decided to go Asus, and have a Z87 Maximus Hero, that as we speak I'm downloading the current driver, going to slap it together Sat ;)

I'm just checking it is possible that the ram incompatibility is causing the freezing problem? It seems so peculiar that with two motherboards of the same brand having the same problem for the same person say 4/100 in have an issue that would mean there would be a 16/10000 chance of getting another problem motherboard. (numbers are made up and assuming perfectly random distribution).
Tomorrow since I don't have work I will be calling newegg and seeing what the options are.

Turns out the motherboard is a return for replacement only item, I think its possible I'm just going to take the hit and get a z87 motherboard instead, and give this motherboard to my dad and see if he can get it working. Kinda annoying, it's probably the ram having issues with an older AMD processor. I'm thinking it might be time to get like an asus ROG board if I can.

I decided to go Intel with a 4670k. The only answer I saw that fit the bill was incompatible ram, and since the ram wasn't returnable it would have cost about $265 to get a new set of ram along with a processor or $295 for a 4670k and new motherboard. So now my dad has a new AMD motherboard that he's been playing around with to upgrade one of his 5 computers.

theres not a single issue with this mother board. solid as a rock and the best amd overclocker on the planet.
I have a amd fx 8320 and msi 990fxa-gd80v2 motherboard overclocked and so fast theres no other amd board with this cpu even close to it. I have installed gskill's ddr3 1600 ripjaw x ram running at 1960mhz on 9-8-8-18 timings. the cpu is running 5.1ghz@41C and dont get no higher than 46c under full load.. most people don't understand this board because it is fool proofed as to its overclocking and the way they layed it out by hiding certain voltages to avoid people burning the board ,ram or cpu out. I mastered the layout of this board and how the voltages apair for overclockers who know what they are doing. if anyone needs any info about the board feel free to hit me up at pauleaton1971@gmail.com ill be more than happy to help out with whatever i can help out with.
