Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the correct section about hardware problems. I couldn't find any section dedicated for problem solving.

My problems is that my video card keep on crashing, it says "Nvidia Kernel Mode Driver has stopped responding and has recovered". I am not sure why this is happening.

It doesn't usually happen between games, or me using the computer. It happens right when I turn on the computer and log into windows. I have to restart it several times until it fix itself. But when I turn off the computer and turn it back on again, this problem comes back the next day. Also sometimes my computer doesn't turn the screen on but I can hear it logging into windows. (the login music)
Then there are times where when the driver crashes, the screens just go black and never come back. ("Cable not connected") Or sometimes the computer just freeze on windows startup. (num lock doesn't do anything, basically dead)

This didn't happen when I bought the machine, it only started about 1-2month ago. Also 1-2month ago, it didn't crash that frequent, only the first time I run the computer each day, so i just restart it and it works. Now I have to restart a lot of times to get it not to crash, also it freezes more frequently.

I bought my computer last year December..It really piss me off when it start to fail this fast. I know the version of the card I bought is pre-OCed, but that should be tested and able to provide stable usage.

My spec:
CPU: Intel I7 3770 @ 3.4GHZ
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 @ 1600
HDD: 500GB SATA3
SSD: Intel 520 120GB
VideoCard: Gigabyte GTX 660 OC
OS: Windows 7 64-bit
MOBO: MSI Z77A-G43
Tower: Zelman Z11 Plus
PowerSupply:OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W

Note: I tried deleting the old driver, and installing new ones, I tried this for several different updates, none worked.

Also I flashed my MOBO to the latest version, still nothing

I read somewhere that the crashes were caused by PCI-E 3.0, so I switched to 2.0, nothing either.

I don't have another card to test if the MOBO is broken, will the on board GPU work? (I have two of the MSI MOBOs..the first one i bought, it came with bent pins on in the CPU slot, they refuse to warranty it, and asked for money to give me a new one..the amount wasn't really worth it, so I had to buy another one instead..)

I'm not sure if I should contact Gigabyte for a warranty..It is a 250 dollar i spend on this card...including tax of course...

Sorry for the long post,
Thanks for any help.

Disable the nvidia card adapter and see if the on-board graphics card still have this error or not. Many people reported that issue on Geforce forums before.

But I'd like to know, what is the driver version you currently installed?

Make sure that you have updated your graphics card drivers. This can possibly be a reason this is happening. If you do not know how to update your drivers you can google it. One more thing to add in if your power supply is nt reliable there is a possibility that it can bring components of your pc to shit. Anyways i am positive it can be something related to the drivers.

326.19, I have tried so many versions when they update..but no luck :(

I'm sure it's not the power supply, I have ran crossfires on my old computer with this..
and now I have less harddrives, so I don't expect it to be the power supply :/

I really cannot see what the problem is then!! I would say WORST case scenario in which you would Not be able to fix the problem you can always upgrade to a 670 since its price has dropped by 100$( 300$ now ) within the past 6 months.

We had the same problem with the same graphics card. After loading and unloading the drivers, re installing windows 7, updating windows and doing almost everyting that the forums said we found the gpu to be faulty. Install the gpu in another machine and see if it works.

Okay...so, I took the card out and used the on-board graphics, it's perfectly fine, no crashes..
I'm now going to try putting the card into the second PCI-E slot..it's a bit slower..but people said they fixed it this way :/
