In 2009 I built a pc and installed a XFX ATI RADEON 4890 1024MB GDDR5.
Time has come for another pc build, having been so impressed by this card I though I would look at what the modern version would be. it cost me £172 in 2009. for similar price range £167 I can get a XFX AMD Radeon HD 7870 Double D (Tahiti LE) 2GB GDDR5.
My question is, will I gain a significant increase in graphics power for Gaming? as the core speed memory speed doesnt seem to have increased that much in 4 years even the ram has only doubled. Im not sure what I expected to find but on paper the increase seems small, how would this relate to real world performance. I play a mixed bag of games old and new from Counter strike to Arma 3 even the awful war Z. please bear in mind this is for a new pc build and not to use in an old machine.

Thankyou for any advice.

As long time "ATI" user I moved to nvidia and I liked it a lot.

Right now the 760 is the best card you can buy for the money. It is a monster and it's very affordable
you should look into that since it runs around the same price as the 7870 xt/le but is quite a bit more powerful.

If you wish to remain with AMD then spend the extra money and get this instead you will be glad you spent the extra 20 when you start overclocking.

Please forgive my stupidity but how is a Radeon 4890 equal to a Radeon 7750 when they are newer or higher in the list is it not as simple as the higher the number the faster the card (7990 faster than 7970 etc)

@ TwistedChilli: Maybe this will help clear things up, check the chart at the end:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gaming-graphics-card-review,review-32716.html
You're not the first and will not be the last to get confused over these numbers: it's only safe to compare those within the same number band as they are usually the same generation, 4xxx to 4xxx or 7xxx to 7xxx but not 4xxx to 7xxx.
This is because the internal designs have changed, allowing the newer chips to do more work in the same time (more work per clock cycle) while using less power.
You need to check as many sites as you can for prices, right now the main UK E-tailers are engaged in a vicious price war with the GTX6xx series getting a particularly heavy dose of the discount stick.
A few good men ;) : Aria, Dabs, Novatech, CCL, Overclockers, Scan, Ebuyer and if you can navigate their labyrinthine site, Pixmania.

Ahhh Thank you, that does make it all much clearer now.
I think I am leaning to a Radeon HD 7950 now hopefully worth the extra. and thank you for the shops I have mainly used Novatech in the past good prices and service but I will look around.

it's the uk chum hes gonna pay a premium for the msi
