So I've heard the board I'm getting (Z87 Sabertooth) comes with some thermal sensors that I believe I can attach to the board and I have a few questions.

First, what exactly do they look like? I think I heard it's something like a wire with a bulb at the end?

Second, where should I put them? Obviously somewhere I want to monitor heat but are there any good places to put them that aren't already covered? First time builder here, so the more descriptive of exactly where the better.

Solution

You affix the thermistors to the devices whose temperature you want to monitor. You can affix them on intake and exhaust fans to monitor intake and exhaust air temperatures. You can affix them to hard disk drives to monitor their case temperature. You can affix it to the cooling fin or topside of the heatsink base to monitor its temperature.

Yes it does come with 3 sensors. Where you want to put them is up to you. The motherboard is already pretty covered with temp. sensors, so maybe you want to check temps around your PSU, hard drives or towards your intake fans for ambient temperature.

well, the psu i have is pretty efficient i think, so hard drives and intake fan are probably the best bet. would outtake fan make any sense or is that pointless for some reason?

Some users want to know the temperature differential within the case.
