Hi guys, I'm pretty much clueless here. I'm planning on buying the Powercolor HD 7870 Myst edition (http://powercolor.com/us/products_features.asp?id=430#S...) and was wondering if my Cougar ST 500w (http://www.cougar-world.com/products/power_supplies/cou...) would be sufficient? I read that Cougar is a decent brand but not as good as the quality brands.

Also I've read that the +12v rail/s are the most important part when choosing a PSU for gaming. Mine has 2 +12v rails with 25A and 20A respectively, with 444w under them. Would that be enough?

The 7870 also requires 2 6pin PCI connectors. Mine has 1 6pin and 1 8pin(6+2) connectors. I was wondering if I could use the 8pin on that?

Any help would be much appreciated.

BTW this is my current rig:
i5-3450 3.1ghz,
GTX 550 ti,
8GB RAM,
Cougar ST PSU 500W,
MSI H61M-P31 (G3) Mobo

you should be fine (although personally I'd rather have a quality PSU from Seasonic, XFX, Corsair, etc.), and yes, you can use the 6+2 connector as the second power cable.

For a system using a single PowerColor PCS+ HD7870 Myst. Edition 2GB GDDR5 [AX7870 2GBD5-2DHPPV3E] graphics card AMD specifies a minimum of a 500 Watt or greater system power supply. The power supply should also have a maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 31 Amps or greater and have at least two 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

Total Power Supply Wattage is NOT the crucial factor in power supply selection!!! Sufficient Total Combined Continuous Power/Current Available on the +12V Rail(s) rated at 45°C - 50°C ambient temperature, is the most critical factor.

Overclocking of the CPU and/or GPU(s) may require an additional increase to the maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current ratings, recommended above, to meet the increase in power required for the overclock. The additional amount required will depend on the magnitude of the overclock being attempted.

The COUGAR ST 500 power supply unit, with its maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 37 Amps and with one 6-pin and one (6+2)-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors, is sufficient to power your system configuration with a single PowerColor PCS+ HD7870 Myst. Edition graphics card.

It should be enough but you should upgrade the PSU because it might fail in stressful situations

Thanks for the replies. I think I'd just go for a better quality PSU. What budget PSUs would you guys recommend? 550w or 600w psus that are reliable.

And do you think the 7870 would fit in my case? http://i.imgur.com/jtJ4ZXW.jpg?1

It's measurements are 10.4 inches x 4.4 inches x 1.4 inches
