Hey guys, Im currenttly waiting on my parts to arrive, and between now and then I just want to make sure Im ready with everything else. This is my first build ever and Im a big newb to all of this. I was hoping to get some advice on booting up the system, windows 8, and finally installing all of my drivers. Starting with booting up the system my motherboard posted below does have uefi interface, dont know if that makes a difference. Im hoping somebody could let me know what settings on it I should leave/change if anything, maybe I just leave everything as is? I really have no clue. I saw a video of this kid booting up his computer for the first time and as a precautionary measure he had a fire extinguisher! kinda scared the shit out of me. Im also trying to figure out what drivers I need to install, I know the video card for sure but am not sure how exactley and then how many times per year I need to update that etc.

I know this is probalby a lot to answer but if anybody on here can help me Id greatly appreciate, I just want my system running as optimal as possible. Down below are my main components for this rig. And thank you in advance.

well, i think the extinguisher is only for a bad psu. if a good brand like seasonic got a reputation for flaming power sources they'd have trouble

i dont know about your board (check the features/specs) but some asus boards have a bios ez flash option where you load the properly labeled bios file that was predownloaded from their website and stick it into a specific usb slot on the board, with a power source i believe (i dont think you even need a cpu in there). From there you press a button for a few seconds and it should flash to the updated bios..something to consider if you are having some issues

what you can do is go to asus website and download the latest versions of their drivers and bios update to a usb drive so that you have it all there and waiting (there was surprisingly a large amount to download for me), and maybe the gpu drivers too (im not sure about that). you might want to update your bios before installing windows 8, for my board at least the bios it ships with is pretty old and issues like usb 3 problems were fixed in later updates

as for windows 8 im pretty sure its just slide it in, answer its questions, and let it do its thing

i dont believe there is anything you need to change right away unless some hardware isnt working like you need it to (certain fans arent spinnin properly or connections arent working right (like with older drives maybe) or something like that. unless it prompts you or you can't get your hardware to work right i believe you dont need to change anything (although someone who has your board who can confirm would be better)

*last i checked the main difference with uefi is that its graphical with keyboard/mouse, i dont think it changes much other than having an easier degree of control

thanks mc, that helps. So basically your saying when it comes to the first screen I see with like downloading preference (in my case I only have 1 hard drive) I can basically leave all those settings as is. Im somewhat confused on the first thing you were saying but I believe its basically to download the driver updates for the motherboard and graphics card on a usb driver from my current computer Im using then I can just plug that in right away and install. And then with windows just make sure my motherboard is up to date before installing, doesn't seem too hard...hopefully ha.

what i meant is download updated versions of your motherboard's (and maybe some other devices but mobo is key) drivers (which shouldnt come with windows) so that its all there and ready (stuff like video, audio, chipset drivers, etc.) and put it all on a usb until you are ready. its all just a file anyway. i dont know if installing the drivers in uefi works but it should be fine in windows. the bios update is generally the more important issue (if your board needs one)

one thing i forgot to mention..since you will not have windows on your blank hard drive you may need to switch the boot order temporarily to boot from the usb/optical drive containing your windows media so that it can install (and just make sure you have it switched back when you finish installing)

^^im assuming your asus uefi will look similar to the one for the board im getting and it looked pretty easy to do (i'll find out today i guess)

*regardless all this info should be in the motherboard manual anyway

okay great, yeah I'm hoping the manuals help me out as I think I'm going to need it. Having said that I feel a little more confident going into this build now with your advice so thanks for that, really appreciate it.

while asus' manual wasnt some miraculous work of art, it did get the job done to a certain extent. most of what they didnt go into much detail in were obscure bios options that i likely won't dream of touching. at least half of the manual was about the bios, covering just about every option in there to a certain extent. the assembly instructions also werent too bad for a picture, although i would look for the youtube assembly videos by asus north america (i think JJ is the tech who does it?) as they show him building a computer pretty much from start to finish. he goes into a nice amount of detail about how everything works and fits together, and even why some bits are better than others. that, supplemented with a few other videos (like the videos that explain how thermal compound spreads and show you EXACTLY in DETAIL how to put the cpu in properly) and that should set you up rather nicely
