Hey guys,

I'm building a new pc with a gigabyte ga-z87x-d3h motherboard and I would like to know which type of memory (dual, triple, or quad channel) would be best!

Solution

Z87 CHIPSET motherboards supports "Dual Channel Memory Architecture". So regardless of the number of modules you install it will run either in Single or Dual Channel mode. Hence, Triple and Quad Channel is out of question.

If you are asking whether it is better to install 2 or 4 or 3 modules then the answer is either 2 or 4 modules. 3 modules is not a ideal setup for this mobo. If you need 32GB then you need to use all the four slots to achieve the max, so in that case 4 x 8GB is what I recommend. If you need 8GB or 16GB or 4GB then install the memory in pairs i.e...

This way you will not only have more room for future upgrades, you will also be running the memory in Dual channel mode with less stress to MC (memory controller).

As for memory speeds, with a K model CPU anything between 1866MHz - 2400MHz is good enough. Try GSkill TridentX, RipjawZ, Kingston HyperX, Corsair Vengeance Pro etc. Cheers, mate!!

Don't make much of a difference to tell you the truth. You could probably set them without any channel at all (stand alone memory) and probably won't perceive a performance difference between each.

Dual-channel had a big impact on first generation of DDR memory when speed was only 400Mhz. But with DDR3 speed being so fast now over 1600Mhz, even tripple or quad channel don't have much of an impact on performance, or maybe just a 5% increase, but you'll have a hard time noticing it.

So my advise would be don't over pay for memory, it's probably the worst component to sink money into, invest in a better CPU, GPU or SSD instead. The only thing is to have enough memory, you could pick 8GB or 16GB in total, but don't over pay for super high end expensive modules.

Thanks man!
I also would like to get a ssd. Would something like this be good http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX42756? Or like http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX35603? Or like http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX39616? Would ssd's go on sale like on boxing day or cyber monday?

Ok sweet! Those two look pretty good! I know this is quite irrelevant but would you happen to know a list or kit for cpu and gpu liquid cooling?
