...but are external HDD's waterproof?
I accidentally dropped this one

in a New York street puddle while it was turned off. Is there any way this thing isn't completely ruined? I don't want to turn it on for fear of further damage.

No, they are not waterproof, unless advertised and sold that way.

Put it in a bag of rice for a couple of days.
Drop + water = I hope you have a backup of the data.

Because "waterproof" or "waterresistant" is not in the specs of the HDD, is going to say that it is not waterproof. But nothing should happen if you check on your pc JUST MAKE SURE IT'S DRY. If anything important was on the drive you could see a professional about saving what's left.

Give it a few days to dry completely and then give it a try. I wouldn't trust this drive anymore, but it may work long enough for you to get back your files from it.
