Does the amount of data I have stored on my HDD effect the performance of my computer? For example, if I have a 500 gb hard drive in a gaming computer and I have games taking up 400gb would my computer start to run slower? Essentially what I'm asking is does the capacity of an HDD have anything to do with performance?

Solution
A disk will be faster when it's almost empty than when it's almost full and very fragmented.

Also, some of your games may install Windows services with automatic startup mode, which take up CPU and RAM and Internet bandwidth even when you aren't using them.

So yeah, clean the garbage and you will get better performance.

It can affect performance if it is the main system drive and you have less than 8-10% free, yes.

However, I have had my 500gb drive (The only drive in this computer) as low as 15gb free with very little impact on performance of the system.
