I am doing a minor upgrade to my system. Would you please double check the order I should perform the following steps? This upgrade involves three modifications: A) adding more memory, B) adding a SSD (for OS/Programs), and C) replacing the existing hard drive to create room for more storage.
You can assume that I'll unplug the power and all peripherals as well as ground myself at the appropriate moments before proceeding.
Proposed order of steps:
1) Back up existing system;
2) Add memory and confirm that the system recognizes it;
3) Add new hard drive, format, and transfer data files (not program files);
4) Disconnect the (now) two hard drives, remove the old primary hard drive, connect only the SSD;
5) At startup, access BIOS and change to ACHI;
6) From DVD drive, use windows DVD to boot, format, and install Windows 7 on to SSD;
7) Reconnect the new secondary hard drive; and
8) Spend the rest of my life reinstalling drivers, programs, etc.
Does this look right? Is there a more efficient/better way?
Thanks for your help!
