I have an older g router and I have no problems streaming HD video, gaming online, surfing, and torrenting at around 20mb/s.
I dont see the reasoning behind this push by everyone for wireless N let alone ac, sure the speeds are faster but the only difference that will make is downloading huge files, it wont affect HD streaming or online gaming or anything less, or am I just missing something important here?

G is 54 Mbps. N is around 300. Ac is around 1000. Anything faster than g is worthless as long as your Internet speed is less than 54 Mbps. N will get you more range if you need it though. I'm pretty sure that I read that ac has lower range than n, so that won't get you much. Also, there aren't many devices that support ac.

yeah I think I read somewhere about ac having shorter range than N, but im guessing its probably more than g. Im thinking this whole thing is being pushed just for the sake of making sales, kinda like the new 4k resolution push thats useless and unnoticable unless you have a 65 inch tv or bigger, but they wont tell the consumer that.

AC is also good for inside the local LAN, not just talking to the outside world. If you need to transfer files between 2 PC's, the faster the better.
