When I leave my Windows 8 Pro machine running, over time the explorer.exe memory grows and grows until the machine tells me it has to close programs because there's no available memory at which point it basically kills and restarts everything.

I've watched Task Manager and the problem memory is always displayed as part of explorer.exe. For example, tonight I woke my PC up and explorer.exe was taking about 2 GBs of memory. Within 20 minutes it was 3.5 GBs. Right now it's around 3.5 GBs, and resource monitor shows Commit ~5.3GBs, Working Set ~5.2GBs, Shareable ~1.7 GBs and Private ~3.5GBs.

I'm not sure when this problem showed up, so I haven't been able to narrow down any specific change that caused this. Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions you have, and let me know what additional information would be helpful.

Well it's getting worse. I just ran into my first blue screen of death, Windows 8-style. PC gave me a blue screen, frowning face, "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart." message. Error: SYS_SERVICE_EXCEPTION (atikmpag.sys). After rebooting, I checked the Event Log and found the following:

Windows successfully diagnosed a low virtual memory condition. The following programs consumed the most virtual memory: explorer.exe (5044) consumed 1727864832 bytes, svchost.exe (1108) consumed 522973184 bytes, and CrashPlanService.exe (2016) consumed 175009792 bytes.

So it appears to be related to the memory leak that I think I have. Any thoughts on what is going on? Ideas to try?
