I forgot to put in the accessory fan that i believe mounts right next to the i/o ports before putting in the motherboard. everything seems to have mounted and screwed in fine, and i dont believe that fan is required, but my real worry is that the mesh in that area is rather big (was meant to have the fan and filter i think behind it). it leads right through to the internals under the thermal armor.

my main question is..is this fine how it is? should i tape some sort of fine dust filter mesh in front of that area? or is it recommended that i take out the motherboard (hopefully not)? i just dont want to be attracting big clumps of dust inside because of this

no, its more like this. You know that honeycomb mesh stuff that goes in front of a fan (has some rather wide holes compared to a dust filter). The i/o shield had a gap like this designed to have one of the small accessory fans behind in (40 mm i believe). This accessory fan went in right under a gap in the thermal armor (right next to the input/outputs in the corner of the motherboard

I forgot to put this fan in before I screwed in the motherboard and cannot get back in there without removing it. I am worried that dust will get in that i/o shield grill slot and make its way into the motherboard under the thermal armor. My question was, would I be fan leaving the fan out and just taping some sort of dust filter mesh in front of that slot or would that be a bad idea.

A picture, to maybe help explain:

its sitting in the bag, the issue is that i forgot to put the fan and its filter in before i put the motherboard in, and i can't exactly slide it between the board and i/o shield. I think on most boards a spot like that would be filled with input/output slots, but since it was originally designed for one of the accesory fans and its filter, there is a larger honeycomb grill structure in the i/o shield designed for one of the tiny fans with a dust filter covering it

i guess my main question is..would it be fine to just tape some sort of dust filter mesh over the outside of the i/o shield in that spot(maybe even use the bit i was suppoed to use) so that i dont get lots of dust in my motherboard? the more i think of it the more it doesnt seem like a problem, but im looking for a second opinion from those who know more

**by the way, i believe the fan was designed to cool the i/o ports in that area, as well as possibly increase airflow to the cpu area. however i still have a cooler, so i dont think i need to worry so much as it's not like i will have much plugged into the back

yeah, i figured that out, but after i decided to take the motherboard out to put the accessory fans in (which after doing it i think is technically possible without doing so)

...well at least i have the fans in now
