Crashing when playing online

Hi, I've been having an issue for a while where i'm playing an online game I notice it in bf3 and world of tanks where the game will freeze for no apparent reason.

Occasionally it will do this then come back (like a massive lag spike). When this is the case there seems to be a bit of a chug from the hd which coincides with the long freeze. Most the time it freezes and I have to force quit the game or switch the pc off manually if i Ctr-Alt-Delete isn't working.

Then it started crashing mid-game to what looks like a spectrum loading screen (all horizontal coloured lines), with a stuttering noise, which required me to restart manually.

Now its moved onto going straight to a blue screen when it crashes (again with the stuttering noise). I still get the freezes during the game, where the game briefly comes back, but at least every other game now ends in blue screen.

I only downloaded world of tanks yesterday and it worked fine for hours. Then gradually it started to freeze during play now and again, then more and more frequently. At the current time it seems to freeze at least every other game and go to blue screen and need manually switching off.

I thought something might have been overheating, so i left my computer off for a few hours and came back and it was still doing it. I turned my pc on this morning, played 1 game of WoT with no issues, second game = bluescreen.

As i said, i had this same issue with bf3. I don't think it can relate to overheating because sometimes it would do it soon after starting playing from a cold start and other times i could play for hours, all day even, without it doing it. It does seem, however, when it starts happening it persists and won't go away, despite restarts etc.

I haven't noticed this happening at all with offline games, although i dont play them so often. It never happens in windows only when in-games. As i said, some of the freezes seem to be accompanied by a chug from the hd so im wondering if thats faulty.

I could really do with some advise before i consider spending money to fix this.

I have a picture i taken with my phone of the blue screen info which hopefully the link below will show

I appreciate any help.

One of your memory modules may have failed. As always, it is recommended to follow the steps that are provided. But most reasons, it does sound like one of your sticks failed.

Thanks for the reply. I have 2x 2 gig sticks on the board so i've taken one out and tried the game, having turned the settings down a bit, and it still froze part way through. I thought maybe i'd got lucky first time but wanted to test the stick so dled, created a boot disc and ran memtest86. 9 passes and no errors found. Im going to try with just the other stick but have a nasty feeling ill have the same results. Any other ideas?

Hi Mind Games, really appreciate the advise. I ran memtest86+ with both sticks in and it didnt find any errors at all. Tried world of tanks again and during second battle i got the blue screen again requiring a manual restart.

This time, when i restarted, windows seemed to be lagging too; also particularly noticeable in internet browser. Clicking on an icon or link and cursor would spin and/or the window would grey out and say not responding for a few seconds and then go to the link or do what i had clicked on.

Restarted and its still the same. Click, cursor spin for few second, then does it, click something else, repeat. Im wondering if its a dying HD now. Any ideas? How do i test a gpu?

thanks in advance

Hi, I got a chap to look at it and he checked everything. In the end he discovered 2 things.

Firstly, the hd was on the way out. It wasn't showing bad sectors but was still not functioning properly.

Secondly, the 450w power supply I had, although sufficient when in windows and such, was not sufficient when my gpu was ramped up during online 3d games. It needed more juice than was available in those conditions which apparently was the cause of the random freezes and eventual crashes and blue screens.

Thanks
