Hello,
I was using my desktop today with no problems playing Battlefield 3 shortly after closing that I decided to move some files around. While these files were transferring the machine started to freeze up. First thing to come to mind was to open task manager, about 1 minute after giving the command the machine unfroze and task manager open.
This is the scary part the machine froze up again, I looked at task manager, which was still running, and it said the disk was:
100% activity
0 ms Average response time
0KB/s Read or Write
It stayed like this till it unfroze and then said the seek time was about 50000 ms. I assumed what may be causing it was a beta video driver (13.8 beta) which I had only installed a few days ago. I uninstalled it successfully with no freezing in the mean time and rebooted. I then started installing 13.2 beta driver which I knew worked, part way through the install the machine BSOD, sadly I didn't get enough time to read what caused it.
I rebooted the machine again to see if I could find out what happened, the machine tried booting for about a minute (longer than normal) and then BSOD with a different message (again though I didn't get to read it fully). This then happened for 2 more boots which is where I gave up.
I am curious to know if this might be the HDD failing or maybe something going seriously wrong with that driver install. When I think about it I keep thinking the HDD is purely at fault.
I have yet to try booting in Safe mode in fear that will just decrease the working life of the drive which has yet to be backed up. As for backing up I am sorted since I have a dual boot of Vista and a connected NAS.
I am merely asking what might be going on? If anymore details are needed just ask.
Yours, Paul
