Hi,

I just bought the Dell u2713hm that supports the 2560x1440 resolution. My laptop (with Geforce GT540M) obviously has only HDMI and VGA port. I will use the monitor only for my job, so Photoshop, Autocad and Rhino (no movies or videogames). I have 2 questions and hope you can help me:

1. HDMI imput seems to be limited to 1920x1080@60Hz, while the VGA reaches 2048x1152@60Hz. You think I have to still use HDMI or I can go for the VGA with a resolution a bit higher?

2. Is there any breakthrough (converter or settings) that let me reach the 2560x1440 resolution with my laptop?

Thanks

The hdmi port itself most likely supports the resolution fine seeing as 1.3 has been around since 2006.

Laptop vendors unfortunately limit hdmi/dp/dvi to single link in a lot of cases on their outputs. Not much you can really do about it. Notable exceptions to this are Alienware, Precision and Clevo on some of their models.

Depending on what laptop you have there are three main options.

If yours supports a dock like most business lines some times those docks will give you access to dual link capacities through a variety of means.

You might be able to find a pcmcia or xpress card that would support it. However those are rather rare and expensive.

Another option would be usb3 to display port if you have a usb3 port on the machine...

I have the Acer Aspire 5750G
(Intel Core i7-2630QM 2 GHz (Intel Core i7); Intel ID0104; 4096 MB, DDR3; NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M - 2048 MB, Core: 672 MHz, Memory: 800 MHz, DDR3, 266.58)

so the cheaper way to achieve the max resolution is the usb3 to displayport adapter?

thanks
