What is thermal paste and do I need it if I plan on doing lots of gaming with this cpu?

Solution
Thermal paste keeps the heat moving from the cpu to the heatsink to keep it cooler. If you dont use any thermal paste the cpu will burn up and fry in seconds. So thermal paste is so very important. All of the processors that come with a heatsink come with thermal paste already on the heatsink. If you want really good paste to replace the stock, sub par paste, go for Arctic Silver 5.

Thermal compound is used to fill in the microscopic grooves and pits that both the Heat Sink and CPU top cover have. When you look at both surfaces with the naked eye it looks pretty smooth but when put under a microscope you then see it isn't so smooth. So this thermal compound (paste) is used to fill in all those grooves and pits so that there is a solid smooth surface on both ends for contact. You need this for the best condition to transfer the heat from the CPU to the heat sink. So when you apply it you need to do so in a very ,very thin layer because too much will act as an insulator and not let the heat transfer take place.
The CPU never comes with thermal compound pre applied but the Hear Sink sometimes does and in either case if it's not pre applied then there will be a small tube of it included with it.
Some people like to buy their own because there may be a particular brand that they like and use all the time. Like I prefer to use Artic Silver 5 and have been for years because it's one of the best and always performs well.
