I currently have Verizon fios modem with a build in wireless network.

I want to add a second wifi. the reason is to have internet access for 2 separate families. while providing security so they can't access each others network/computers, printers, and data.

is it as simple as pluggin a Linksys into the modem ?

Solution
The second network part is easy the security part is not. The second router will operate and share a single address behind the first router. This means it can access the first router as its default gateway but it can also access all the other machines in this network. Now going the other way from the machine behind the first router to the machines behind the second router will not happen because of the nat much like someone from the internet try to access your machines that are behind the first router.

So the security is partial and the networking mostly works but you will still likely have issues with anything that needs port mapping or UPnP capability.

There is no easy way to do what you want to do with consumer grade...

There is no easy way to do what you want to do with consumer grade equipment. You would need a actual router or firewall that can do what you want. Depends how much equipment you are willing to buy. It is likely possible with a consumer router running DD-WRT but you would have to somehow replace the fios device which likely will not run dd-wrt

I think you really need 3 routers, each configured with a different subnet. Router 1 will plug directly into the modem, I wouldn't use a router with wireless for that. The other 2 routers will plug into the switch ports on router 1, those will be the routers for the other 2 networks. If the fios modem is a gateway modem with multiple switch ports on it already you can use that for router 1.
