I've had my laptop for about three years now. I run my normal stuff pretty consistently ( Avg, CCleaner and malwarebytes) but I want to know what else i can do to speed up my older PC and overall just make it more efficient. I knows theirs defragging the hard drive but don't know that much about it. Overall I'm curious in general about PC maintenance. (sorry if this is in the wrong forum). Thanks for any help.

ccleaner and malwarebytes are both good programs. add superantispyware as well.i prefer avast to avg.it seems to a little easier on system resources. i assume your running win 7? it has a good defragger built in. as was posted disable auto defrag.just analyze the drive periodically with the defragger. that having been said i find win 7 doesnt seem to need defragging nearly as often as say xp. this is all housekeeping and needs to be done regularly to keep your machine running smoothly. you should also in the run command type msconfig and use it to stop programs you dont need at startup from automatically starting when windows starts.there are also,if you google it some really good tutorials on tweaking windows 7 to run faster.keep in...

If you dont know much about HDD defrag, then probably didnt disabled the auto defrag from windows (wich comes enabled by default). Speeding up a HDD based lapptop its tricky :), here are a few tips: disable scheduled defragmenting (right click on drive /properties/tools) and run it manualy from time to time., if you are confident in your skills, disable system restore. To speed up your startup a bit, run "autoruns for windows" (google it) and disable unnecesary startup programs (dont disable drivers :p)... and , ultimatly, if you have the cash, go for an SSD...the difference will blow your mind :D
