Obtained a free i5 3550 Ivy bridge processor. Wanted to build a low cost home PC, not much on gaming. What is a good value mother board and HD combo?

I have a good monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I was thinking about staying with Windows 7. Haven't used Windows 8, but haven't heard many good things about it either. Do I need a fan?

no you don´t , since this CPU has locked multiplier so you won´t be overclocking...
however if the box cooler would seem loud to you you could still add some better solution later...

Yeah sure windows 7 is great, if you do want a rig that is capable of gaming then a nice 7770 Ghz edition would be able to beat through almost anything at high settings at 1080p:

Would there be much benefit in buying a SSD for running my OS (Windows 7) and another 7200 RPM HD for everything else? A friend suggested that the system would run much faster with this configuration.

You wouldn't notice an increase in gaming performance, just things would load faster.

With an SSD what you get is basically faster boot times and less loading times, but your FPS in games would still be the same.
