I've got a 1tb WD Elements external drive that we use for shared media storage on our home network - iTunes library & videos. With increasing frequency, the hard drive seems to 'disconnect' and then comes one of two requests, either a) do I want to format the disk or b) scan & fix for errors. (apologies, I'm not sure what sequence those messages come in).
When choosing Scan & Fix, it doesn't seem to do anything, and after an hour or so it asks if we want to start the scan (though we'd hit the Start button before). I left it on overnight and the progress bar was at zero and the Start button was available again. I did, however, choose Bad Sector Recovery but that shouldn't make a difference, should it?
I just ran the quick test of the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics and it passed - I'll run the extended one next.
In the meantime - does any of this indicate an issue with the drive or the USB ports? The computer is a 2008 Thinkpad T400 and one of the ports doesn't seem to work. Since I use it primarily for network storage & file sharing, would it be better to connect it to router instead?
Thank you.
