Good day all,
I get a black screen when loading windows 7 on my hp pavillion dv9000. ive tried many things (listed below) and i think i have it narrowed down to the display adaptor. At some point, all my drivers went to windows default. I have no base system driver, whatever that means and more specifically, windows defaulted to its standard display adapter rather than the nvidia geforce go 7600. So when i download the proper nvidia driver, i have to restart to install BUT when i restart, i always get a black screen and the system must restore, so i can never install the driver. The heck should i do? does this prove i need a new video card?

Just a note, under msconfig, if i try a clean boot- the system always starts up just fine. but as soon as i select normal startup, it fails again. But there is no one service that is causing it to fail!

Things i've tried:
cleaning fan, new thermal paste, ram stick check, reinstall windows, HD scan, startup troubleshooting (under msconfig)

My friend was saying that despite the HD check i ran, it still sounded like an hard drive issue. Any opinions on that? aside from swapping with another harddrive, is there another way i can be sure?
