Hello,

My graphics card (AMD XFX 7870) basically maxes out when the PC isn't used at all or when the screen blacks out; the GPU usage jumps up to 97% until i move my mouse or open a program and start using the computer...

I have uninstalled the drivers completely from the computer and that seemed to fix the problem but without drivers I can't play any games and such. I've also tried installing drivers from the CD provided with the card but that made things even worse as it begun to crash random programs and AMD catalyst on it's self.

I've also tried to update the drivers but the problem still persists.

Any idea's of what could be causing this strange behavior of the card?

Thanks.

Reinstall everything. Clean new install. Some rootkit will never show when you run a virus check. Not normal that GPU does this. Sound alot like bitecoin mining... alot...

Check one thing, that is the speed of the GPU along the CPU workload.

Maybe when you are not using it at then the GPU jumps at 95% is because you drop from 1GHz to 150Hz or whatever are the floor of the card to save power and only keep the refresh is enought to cap it.

the CPU stays normal as if it isn't used when the GPU usage blows up. The idle of the GPU 300MHz / 150 MHz jumps to 1000 / 1200 MHz when the usage is 97%

I was thinking could it be a virus but i never would've thought it could be affecting your graphics card; I'm going to run one now; thanks for pointing it out.

My computer is clean so I guess I can tick a possibility of a virus off my list..
Any other ideas?

Everything seems normal .. unless i don't know how to pick out unusual ; what do you mean by unusual? What would make a process unusual?

Ah right I've done that and everything seems normal. No usual processes running.. Everything that should be running is.
