Approximate Purchase Date: within the next month
Budget Range: $600 (with OS) closer to $500 if it can be helped

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, 3D modeling (down the line for 3D printing) media streaming (mostly youtube) surfing the internet

Parts Not Required: keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: none
Country: US

Parts Preferences: good reputation brands :)

Overclocking: No
SLI or Crossfire: Nope

Monitor Resolution: 720p tv with VGA and HDMI inputs

Additional Comments: Don't hate me, most of my hardcore gaming is done on the Xbox 360, although with the coming features and expectations of next gen consoles I might be shifting away from it. Anyway, the build I'm aiming for is a budget gaming build. From what I've seen in other places the CPU, mobo, and RAM is a pretty standard config, so my only contention is the graphics card. I don't have a need to play on ultra high settings, I play the game because its fun as long as it plays smooth. The gaming I do currently is mostly Gmod, CSS, League of Legends, The Sims 3(wife plays it) GTA:VC and SA.... nothing real demanding. I have plans to play Minecraft, Torchlight 2, Infestation: Survivor Stories and some other games that I can have fun with friends in.

I had a friend encourage me to get something better than the GT 620 but I don't want to spend money on wasted horsepower. Should I go to the 630 or 640? Or something else entirely?

The graphics card definitely won't meet your needs. Maybe spend less money on the hdd (500gb instead of 1tb) and put that money toward a better card.

I would try getting an ati 6770.

Just out of curiosity, if those GPUs are never good enough for games, what are they good for? Just better integrated graphics? Video streaming?

Good question, I wonder about low tier graphic's ROI when they cant supply noted improvements on 1. gaming performance, 2. Rendering/GPGPU specific tasks.

IMHO, AMD's APU and intel's newest generation is pushing out some of the low tier graphics. That said, Ill always be a dedicated graphics nutcase :pt1cable:

I would consider those gpus for office work.

Alright then, I'll suck it up and get a better GPU. I shouldn't need a beefier PSU right? Part picker tells me this build is using less than 200W so the boost in GPU shouldn't be a big deal I'm assuming

for gaming, 3d modelling, editing, you would be better off with this GPU and CPU. Dual Core and GT620 isn't going to help with 3D modelling. I used a HD7870 w a 3570k a few months back and when I use things like UDK/SolidWorks, it is smooth but sometimes lags occasionally which is annoying.

You can easily play almost all the med-big sized games with that gpu at lowest settings. But If you can go for atleast gt650ti, you'll have a much better experience for future too.

with the 620?

My 3d modeling would be minimal hobby modeling when I finally get a 3D printer. The modeling wouldn't be extensive or intricate if I can help it. But I won't be doing any rendering or kinematics, maybe simple stress/displacement analysis. I've been using Solidworks for 3 years now at my job and I fully understand how annoying it can be. I was planning on some basic open source program or google sketchup. I don't do any vidoe editing or photoshop, any photo editing is basic. Don't know if that changes anything, just thought I'd put it out there

Well, for almost an identical price point, I would say go with the better CPU and GPU combo. If you want to safe some, keep the CPU but swap the GPU for something cheaper, such as a GT630/HD7730. You could drop the GPU entirely and use on integrate GPU which is pretty decent compared to GT620/630.

From there, just upgrade for more HDD or something of your choice. If you are on a budget now, I would recommend not getting a GPU, use integrated graphics, if it runs for your needs well, don't upgrade, if it doesn't save some budget aside and upgrade to a good card if you feels the need. Usual GPU upgrade involves plugging and downloading software and you're done(Pretty simple).

Trust me when I say this... a gt620 is not what you want. Get ATLEAST an ati 6770

ok, gpu issue resolved, need better card. But now I'm thinking back to a choice of intel or amd, I completely forgot about Neweggs super combos and a lot of them are pretty much just missing GPUs, which we have now cleared up. So far everything intel is at least an i5 and also over my budget while missing a gpu. So if I bat for the other team (now that vinhn brought that back to the table) what am i looking at? fx > A > Phemon? at least FX 6XXX, A8 and not even consider Phenom?
