Hello Everyone,

I recently purchased a used gaming pc from a mutual friend of mine. As you could expect everything was going good until about a week ago.
Here are the specs for my pc:

There are a few case fans I didn't add to the parts list. About a week ago I went to boot up the system and I got an error message regarding multiple failed boots due to an overclock. I myself am new OCing and wasn't even aware that there was an OC on the processor. My gaming performance before the error message/failure was pretty nice for what I was playing. I had WoW running on ultra at a steady 55-60 fps while questing and whatnot (Might dip down to 45 fps if there was alot going on). I also play SWTOR and was running it on very high setting and getting approximately 60-70fps all the time with no issues. Now when I play both games I'm looking at no more than 23-25 fps on either at the same settings. Further more when I lower the settings my fps is still that low, if not lower. As far as the OC goes, my friend stated that he did OC the processor to 4.2ghz. What can I do to fix this?

Solution

I'm sorry I can't be of more help, at least you know whats wrong just google around and hopefully you will find your answer. I would try a clean windows install just to see if it helps. And flash the bios to the latest version.
Ask your friend if he overclocked using software or from the bios. If he did it from the bios you will need to go into it and look for the CPU multiplier, set that to auto and it should go back to stock settings. Or look for a set to default option somewhere.

Monitor CPU/GPU usage and temperatures while in game. You want to make sure you are not overheating, might need to reapply thermal paste. Make sure there isn't any other programs running in the background that might be hogging up resources.

Thanks for the response burdenbound, I can post screenshots of my temps but everything appeared normal. However when looking closer at cpu-z and task manager I noticed something odd which I woulds assume could be the culprit for my performance loss. My quad core i5 2500k is showing up as a single core and it shows a speed of anywhere between 1.6 ghz and 3.4ghz.

Well that is definitely not normal. The fluctuating between 1.6Ghz and 3.4Ghz could be it's built in power saver. But showing up as one core is not right. Did you do a fresh windows install when you got the system from your friend? Look under device manager and see if there is anything with a yellow exclamation mark next to it, this should indicate that there is hardware installed that does not have a driver. Just make sure everything is lined up on that front.
