I've been searching the internet about this for a while but I just get more confused the more I read.

I am looking for a simple HTPC or other HT-system (android dongle, raspberry pi) that can output 5.1 (HD) audio to my receiver (Yamaha-RX-V373). What do I need to play 5.1 Audio via HDMI the HT system HDMI output? I want to be able to play 1080p blu-ray files from the PC (or HT-system).

I'm looking for the cheapest possible option. Do I need a high-end graphic card to play 5.1 audio and 1080p .mkv files?

EDIT: Maybe the Audio does not necessarily have to output via HDMI. Can I buy a sound card for the PC with 5.1 audio, and connect this to my AVR? Like this:

PC HDMI -> AVR -> TV
PC optical -> AVR

Solution

Just get a motherboard...

Should I connect the Audio from the motherboard to the AVR optical inputs or can I look for a motherboard with integrated graphics and HDMI? Do I need bitstreaming?

Edit: I have a Asus G51J laptop lying around. Can I plug the HDMI from this laptop to my AVR, and play 5.1 audio (and video)?

They have the individual hook ups for each channel [front, back, subwoofer (side if it is 7.1)]. If you use optical or HDMI, the video actually has to be coded for 5.1 for the back and maybe subwoofer to work. You're going to have to mess with the settings in your audio driver either way.

I'm not sure if graphics card audio drivers support 5.1, though, so I can't tell you if the laptop will work.

Just get a motherboard with HDMI and a processor with onboard graphics. Just about anything will play 1080p files nowdays.
