Building a new system soon, need help choosing a CPU

I'm finally getting rid of my system that's running an old Core 2 Duo. Mainly, I'm looking at the Core i series but I've seen some decent things about the FX series as well.

What the PC will be used for:
Gaming
Compiling Code
Light video editing
Light 3D Rendering (Not animating)

I believe I've read that the difference between the i5 and i7 on gaming isn't much but I don't know at all how it would affect long compile times. I also wouldn't put it past me to be dead wrong. I don't know a whole lot about the FX line but my guess is I should be looking to Intel for my needs. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Intel has the edge in gaming, but the FX series has the advantage in multi tasking with the 8 core processors. So if you are leaning more to gaming, go for an i5, if you do more multi tasking or editing go for an 8 core FX.
  2. Budget? going to overclock?
  3. Budget I'm looking at 1.5 - 2.5k. Hadn't planned on overclocking but I'm not against it.
