My wifi shuts off sporadically and I don't have access to the modem to reset. Would a wireless adapter stop this from happening?

Like I said, if it goes out on all of your devices at the same time, it's either the "modem" (really most likely a wireless router) or interference. If the owner knows for sure that he is not having any problems, then it is probably interference. I would search for a list on google that lists out devices that run on the 2.4 ghz wireless range and try to eliminate them in your house. I know wireless phones and microwaves among other things will cause problems.

You have to determine if the problem is your computer or the access point. Does it shut off for all of your devices? If so, then the problem is either radio interference or a bad access point. If not, then replacing the adapter might help or maybe try a driver update.

It also shuts off the Nook. I don't have access to the modem. Is that the access point? The modem owner tells me that I am the only one who gets knocked off; not his laptop, not the other tenant in the house, and not his next door neighbor. I updated the driver. But what about the Nook?
