I recently was handed a sony VGC-RC310G desktop because the original owner complained about the computer running very slow, etc. Of course, the computer is fairly old, and he was running win7 on it; additionally, I assumed the computer was infected to the brim(95% positive).

Anyway, I formatted and installed debian(gnome 2) on it, and it worked extremely good for awhile. That is until I noticed artifacts on the screen, stuff floating around the mouse, and it would freeze up(the OS was also complaining about a GPU lockup); I assumed it was the graphics card.

I did a lot of research, and came to the conclusion that a Gigabyte Radeon HD 6670 would be a good replacement gpu. So I purchased a new one on amazon. It came today, and I placed it into the pci slot where the old gpu was. However, upon booting it up, the screen seems to be wrong(I don't know how to explain it; I'll post pictures below).

It starts up just fine; no sparks, weird sounds, etc. It's just the screen that is the issue, and I don't believe it's the monitor itself that's the issue.

Sony vcg-rc310g specs:
CPU: Intel pentium D 940 3.2GHz FSB 800MHz L2 Cache 4MB
RAM: 2GB DDR2
HDD: SATA 300GB 7200rpm
PSU: 400W
*STOCK GPU*: NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT 256MB SDRAM

Gigabyte Radeon HD 6670 specs:
Core: 800MHz
Mem: 2GB 128-bit DDR3
Mem Clock: 1600MHz
PSU Requirement: 400W

*UPDATE*:
The following is a list of things I've tried just now in attempts to fix the problem, but have Failed

1. Pulled out Radeon gpu and tried to clean pci slot and pins

2. Reinserted old gpu, 7600GT, and the intel, sony, and Linux mint pictures were excellent except when the OS kicked in, then it froze.

3. Unplugged HDD, other pci hardware, disc drives, and mouse + keyboard in hopes to rule out a psu issue.

4. Tried a different monitor, HDMI instead of vga.

Again, the above list hasn't solved the issue

Anyone have any ideas on what could be the issue?

No one has any ideas? Direction pointing? This is the first graphics card that I've ever bought in my life. I have no clue if this could be a simple motherboard issue, psu issue, or a simple driver issue. Though, even when I boot into BIOS, the screen is all jumbled up, with green lines across the screen making it hard to read.

Also, today I booted into gnome and found the screen to be displaced with green and magenta, making it very hard to read anything; moving the mouse around will randomly pop up a small green or magenta mouse around it. Lastly, debian said that the GPU failed to load properly...

So, sorry to moderators for bumping; however, that being said, I believe the only solution now is to return it since I believe it is a defective product(unless anyone can convince me otherwise).
