PC randomly shuts down doesn't come back on with power button. Sometimes will come back on by itself for 10 min then off again

Hi,

I've had this problem ocurring for the past two weeks on this barely one year old modern PC. Basically its been shutting off after 5-10 minutes all by itself and not coming back on if I press the power switch. However, It will sometimes randomly come back on again during the day after a hour or a few hours or sometimes not even come back on by itself without doing anything. When it does come back on it doesn't seem to stay on for more than 10 minutes. and the cycle keeps repeating etc. But no matter how many times I press the power switch it wont come on like this after its switched off by itself. It only seems to come back on when it feels like it lol.

So I've tried a few things. Firstly I sent it back to where it was built last week as its still under warranty. They found no issues with it whatsoever, it was running for 48 hours down there running intense stuff like 3d mark etc. Not once did it go off for them. This makes me completely perplexed as to why its only happening to me??!

I got the pc back from them today and sure enough it still went off by itself about 5-10 minutes after loading Windows 7 and connecting everything back in - shutting down completely and refusing to come back on.

Its not a temperature issue as it has so many fans inside and coretemp says about 30-40 degrees for cpu (i5 3750k) and about the same for single gpu (gtx 670). Its not over clocked etc. Just shuts down randomly when just using net or even if its completely idle. It has a more than adequate psu 750w corsair bronze.

So I really dont know what to do here. The place that built it didnt experience this problem. I've tried taking things out one by one to see if it would eventually come back on but it didn't. Tried taking out both hdd's and having one or the other in there and it wouldnt come on. Minimum connections at the back taking out usb leads etc and made no difference.

Any ideas? I still think its the power supply and maybe they just got lucky that it stayed on for them for two whole days? But this seems kinda doubtful as it doesnt stay on for me for more than 10 minutes when it does come back on (which in itself is rare if its going to come on or not).

It certainly sounds like a power issue; whether that be the PSU or your building's power source is the question. The delay in starting back up could be circuit-protection similar to the response to a power surge.

I assume you have plugged your system into a reliable surge protector? If not, please do so - if you're currently using one, try switching it out.
Have you tried to use a different wall outlet?

If indeed the power supply were faulty, one would expect the company who serviced/tested your PC to have experienced some kind of fault during intense testing as described, if indeed the testing was done.

I would check the above (different outlet, ensure that you are surge protected) first, then look into swapping out the PSU with a known good unit (do you have a spare sitting around that has enough juice to power your system, or can you borrow a friend's?). Swap them out and see if the result is the same.

I tried different wall outlets, different surge protectors even a different power lead for PC and it has made no difference. PC won't come on but the mobo light inside is always on. Have no idea why the tech guys I sent it back to never experienced this issue as it was constantly on for 48 hrs down there and didn't go off.

As the PC has been moved around considerably (from the shop to you, from you to the shop and back again) you may want to consider removing all components and re-seating them, as well as checking cable connections. Could be a loose wire or other component causing an issue.

The only other thing I can personally think of would be a faulty PSU.

Honestly if I were in this position I would insist the company who built/tested the PC do so in my presence, to ensure the testing was actually done, especially considering your original post stated that the PC wouldn't stay on for more than 10 minutes or so.

Hey der,
I think it might be some cause of ur home surroundings causing ur pc to overheat and this is leading to possible turn off. or maybe some electrical grounding problem. even i had this problem but it was caused by a dvd writer which pulled in more power. I have a corsair psu. when i removed the dvd writer it worked fine. check ur ground in electrical socket with a test lamp or multimeter
Corsair are dependable but come with der problems. are u using a UPS.?

fro now check the earthing or ground connections in the sockets if its proper then remove the DVD writer power connection turn it on check it. If works fine do likewise with GPU and any other extra components. (other than wat a pc would take to run.)

or Best is why dnt u just take the cabinet and plugin in ur neighbors place, see how it works.
