Hello, first time posting here. Looking for help with best value for performance in a new gaming machine I'm building as far as GPU's. So first price really isn't an issue but why spend more than necessary... I plan on the following setup:
- ASUS 1440p monitor
- 4770k
- Hero VI Mobo

I don't think the rest is necessary to answer this but will respond if needed, but what would be the best GPU setup. This is currently what I'm looking at all around the same price:
- Single GTX 780
- SLI 770 2GB (4GB a few hundred more)
- SLI 760 4GB

I've read a bunch so far but haven't really found the concise answer. I'm leaning towards the single 780 with the option to SLI it later if needed. I plan to play FF XIV and Elder Scrolls Online at max settings on a single monitor. The options I posted above are only my thoughts, I'm happy to hear if there is a better option than posted above. Again, I don't want to overspend but if you guys say the only way you are running ESO at max is SLI 780's than that is a good answer for me. I'm pretty set on the rest of this build just trying to get this last piece right. Thanks in advance!

I agree with your first option, go for the single 780 and SLI in the future if needed, SLI with two 780's you'll be able to play anything for years to come.

Also the 780 being the most powerful of those cards will have enough bandwidth and juice to take advantage of the 3GB VRAM which you may need if your whacking up AA etc, it'll also be more future proof.

If you've got the $$$ and want the performance I think that's your best bet over the long run.

You can check out what games you play and what cards needed to power such resolution. From the link, there is no 1440p but there is 3x1080p, so if SLI GTX770 can handle a game at 3x1080p, you are good to go with 1440p.

As you can see, SLI GTX770 can power most games at High settings for 3x1080p, but if you want maxed out, you will need at least SLI GTX780.

Terrible timing in invest in good performance at 1440p. Anything you buy now will be obsolete soon. AMD(Radeon) and nVidia will be moving to the next generation soon.

All current GPU's are based on the 28nm fab process out of TSCM(Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co). This tech dates back to late 2011.

Research Volcanic Islands(AMD) and Maxwell(nVidia). In the near future having 680/770(GK104) in SLI will be like having dual 480/580's right now. Very inefficient and graphically weak. As for the GTX Titan... the 16th century proverb:

Do you think I need the SLI or the single card is going to be solid right now? I keep reading many opposing arguments of SLI vs get a single card that meets needs. I never play crysis or the demanding FPS games, just like WoW, SWTOR, and FFXIV soon, then ESO when it launches. But I do like to have solid graphics on the high settings and steady FPS. I chose those 3 options because it seemed they benchmarked around the same and the price was about the same. I'm fine with stepping up the price, but I read so many posts when you start talking about sli 780's or titans it's overkill on a single monitor for these games...

Seems like everything I read says Maxwell is at least 8-10 months away. I mean upgrading to that vice upgrading to 780 SLI would be fine by that time, unless your telling me that going 1440 is wrong? Or are you just saying don't spend the 600 bucks on the 780 because of Maxwell soon? In that case I'd think you'd say get the cheaper 760's or 600 series now and be ready to upgrade to Maxwell next year...? I'm building a machine now so I do need some option! :)

Well... the decision is ultimately yours.

I just wanted you to be aware of the timing. Cause if you get the successor to the GTX 770/80 or Radeon 7950/70 you'll be "state of the art" for approx the next 2 years :)

Next month(on the 25th) in Hawaii AMD is having an intro party for their "Volcanic Islands" GPU's. As Hawaii is the code name for the 7950/70 successor and of course the islnds are volcanic. Anyway naming may not follow in the tradition path. So don't necessarily expect 9950/70 (8000 is already used for OEM marketing on new laptops).

Not sure if you follow prices, say at newegg.com But Radeon GPU prices have been cut hard. They must be clearing out the old stock. I can't see Nvidia maintaining their current prices; sales would dry up? The GTX 770 needs to drop to $300 or less, I would think. Plus I also I can't see Nvidia missing Chrismas sales for their new "Maxwell" GPU's. Frig, why always delay? They all come out of the same plant anyway (along with smart phone chips). It's like AMD has deal with the devil to always be first.

Hadn't even been looking at AMD, everyone I know dumps on them. I've had AMD (6900 crossfire) for the past 2 years and no issues personally but was going to switch up cause of they're comments(literally don't have one smart friend who likes AMD better)...but your post made me go look to them and the prices have been cut, 7950's are like $250, so a xfire of those would be less than a 780 and the 7990 is down to the same price as 780. So, what's your opinion on 7990 or a xfire 7950 to start? I hear you on the new cards coming out and I'll upgrade then, but want to complete this build, so I guess most bang for the buck makes most sense if upgrading soon? The 7990 looks pretty sweet to me, especially at the price, thoughts?

A HD 7990 is a beast but the 690 and 7990 are both essentially two cards in one, I think the 7990 is two 7970's on one card.

It'll run anything but you may get microstuttering.

I've never had a card that powerful so I can't relay first hand experience.
