A friend gave me her Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5050 laptop. The hard drive died and I am going to replace it. My question is, she did do not have any operating disks. Do I have to purchase windows 7 or can I get it from Toshiba using the Product Key?

Solution
You can borrow or download any windows 7 dvd and use that to install.
Select the original version, presumably home premium, and you can use the product key on the laptop to activate.

May I suggest that this would be an opportune time to install on a SSD. It will absolutely transform the performance of the laptop.

You will need to install many Toshiba drivers to get it fully working. They should be available on the web site.

The above answer should work, I did it myself using XP for the same reason. I did the "call Microsoft" option to Activate. I got an Automated response and things went smoothly.

I do however suggest you contact Toshiba Customer Support to see if you can get discs. Many laptops have one-year Warranties after which Customer Support basically won't even talk to you so you probably are out of luck.
