For all of you coming to see this looking for a possible answer to lag spikes. Check your harddrives! Just dumped my Caviar Green and installed new Caviar Black and all games are running smooth as butter. Thanks to one of the commenter's, Check below for name.

*I do not see a remove option for the post*, if and admin wants it off just remove it.

Okay, I'm very new to this whole forum thing so if I placed this in the wrong sub than just tell me.
My PC specs are:
Graphics: GeForce GTX 670, MSI OC Edition
Processor: Intel Core i7-2600 at 3.90GHz Hyperthreaded to 8 CPU's
Memory: 8GB at 1600 (2x4GB)
HDD: Western Digital 2TB Caviar Green
SSD: Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB
Supply: CoolerMaster 750W
Case: CoolerMaster HAF 912 Mid-Tower
Motherboard/Chipset: MSI Z77-GD65

Okay so.. I just recently (past 30 days) upgraded my PC! The two things I added were a MSI Z77-GD65 motherboard and a Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD. When I made this upgrade I completely reinstalled the computer. Formatted both hard drives and then set my SSD for a Boot and 2TB wd as a Storage. When I did this upgrade I also overclocked my CPU from 3.4 to 3.9(max). Before I made this upgrade my games ran smooth as can be and I never had lag spikes or anything. Now since the upgrade in all games I get lagspikes every minute or so and this really bugs me because I'm quite a competitive player in multiple different games.. Cod4 etc..

This mainly at the moment is bugging me the most in cod4 because when you play competitive life and death is a matter of milliseconds.

The issue is not power because the game runs smooth at 250 fps and doesn't drop below.. its just that every minute or so my frames will randomly drop down to 1 and then straight back up..

I don't know if this is a harddrive speed issue (all my games run off of my storage hdd [2TB WD Caviar Green]) because it is now 2 or 3 years old.. I dont have any issues loading stuff from it or anything but yea. Please help! :)

-Spencer~zumanic21,
ps. I tried to include as much info because last time I posted I had to edit 2 times to add more info from comment questions.

pps. I usually have Skype, Spotify, Steam, Xfire and Google Chrome running in background. but cpu load never leaves a threshold of 0 to 35%?.

I'm going to take a guess and say it's the Caviar Green that's responsible. As an experiment, you could move one of your games that stutters to the SSD and see if it persists. If it goes away, then it is the Caviar Green causing it. If it keeps doing it, then we can check elsewhere.

I'm going to move CoD 4 (main game this persists in) over to my SSD and play then. Since I've posted this I've noticed some things and done some testing. I ran RealTemp on other monitor and Task Manager to monitor CPU and RAM load and they were both stable when the lag spikes happened. So that's not the issue.. and I've also played a bunch of different games testing for spikes and some came up with none.. Mirror's Edge, Dead Space 3, The Witcher 2, Trials Evolution, Left 4 Dead 2 and on. But it still persists in Cod4, Dark Souls and Minecraft as far as I know now.

OMG! Thank you! Now I've only done 1 hour of gameplay on each. But when I was playing on SSD, I never got any spikes in a whole hour, but within the first 5 minutes of playing normally.. launched from Steam on Storage drive. I was getting lag spikes.. Thank you! But now.. I'm guessing this drive is slow because it came from a pre-built Chinese Gateway machine and that its been between 5 different builds and 2 motherboards but If I buy a new one for storage should I get a Caviar Black or Green? And will the spikes continue?

Edit: I just went to Newegg.ca and ordered in a 2TB Caviar Black HDD, I was doing some researching and now I see the life spans of HDD's and also see that they never really "break" per-say but they lose productivity/speed over time. I got the new one for 30% off (230$ - 70$).
