This is just a thread for fails with computer hardware.

My most epic fail was attempting to convert a 2001 dell xps into an open air build using a lot of wood and some metal screws......well when I was attaching the wood frame to the psu I think one of the screws hit something important cuz when I turned it on there was a huge zapping sound and some sparks from the psu. I then proceeded to try power it on again.......this time it seemed to work but there is a rly loud whine now.......

I'm encrypting every drive on my machine but one time, i choosed some keyfiles to add to the 2 factors authentification i was already using (password + a Yubikey random password)

Problems, i've selected some keyfile in the current partition and i wasn't able to boot anymore !! Format and reinstall windows, programs, re-encrypt all the thing, etc...

I've learned my lessons by having a hard week !!

PS: still a good thing, i'm now using two USB key for my keyfiles so it's now somewhat a 4 factors authentification added to the password and the random generated one ;)

Fresh format C: drive, go through the long process of installing Windows XP (with the network cable attached). Before I even finished the initial boot, I was infected with Sasser virus.
Format C:\.....

Not that epic, but it sucked.

I'm not sure which system, I think it was my S754 which had a sempron 2800+. I decided that even though I didn't have any heat issues, I'd slap a 40mm fan onto the southbridge heat sink to help it stay cooler. I forgot to check everything though, and when I slapped my AIW 9600pro back into the AGP slot, the added height of the fan broke a capacitor off the GPU. I had to run out and get a 9700pro and remove that stupid fan from the heatsink.
